From Metalhead@46:1/104 to All on Thursday, August 25, 2016 01:37:31
For all you Usurper fans: (All 3 of us!)

I was married to Sarah.. and can you believe that the bitch had the audacity
to divorce me!? I was heartbroken! LOL

Good thing I was the king.. There's a severe penalty for such an offense!

But seriously, take this as a tip: If you're a married Usurper player, be
sure to pay some attention to your wife (Buy her stuff, bang her, do something.) Because as you should know, being married has it's perks; You
have the option of sleeping at "Home," where nobody can attack you. (As far
    as I know.)

For a while, I purposely banged anyone BUT my wife because I made a game of
it to try to impregnate ALL of the Usurper bitches. But, lesson learned..

Usurper has no rhyme or reason, and that's why I like it!

How about being able to gain levels of experience by repeatedly having sex in one session. Like 30+ times.

I also like fighting players in the dorm, especially when someone jumps out a closet to help the guy you're trying to kill. No subtext there at all.

Or how about the "secondary" combat system that's only used for bar fights?
Is there any reason to train your "dropkick" or "uppercut" when the only
place you use it is the pointless bar fights?

Or when an NPC kills you, takes all your gear, then you find him lurking in
the back alley, you commit an "evil deed" and bash his brains out, then steal back all your gear. What's funny is you don't actually have to fight, you
just opt to do evil and it lets you select how you want to kill the person,
so that's like a third(?) combat system?

However winning the game is actually NOT fun. Once you become a god and rule the kingdom, nothing really happens. You can't even cause mayhem. It's like
the old Talking Heads song "Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens..."

    Still love the game though.

Is there more than 1 kind of "experience" points? I mean, do sex experience points get you more ass, or do they get you closer to advancing to the next level?

I also like fighting players in the dorm, especially when someone jumps

I haven't tried fighting players in the dorm yet. Is that similar to fighting players at the Inn? Because last time I fought at the Inn, I lost some really expensive weapons!

Also, I see it won't let me fight players, at the Inn, who are below my
level. But I found out that if I fight a player at the Inn, who is slightly above my level, it's just suicide.

But what if you're at a lower level, but you have the ultimate weaponry? Does that mean you can whoop anyone's ass?

Or how about the "secondary" combat system that's only used for bar fights? Is there any reason to train your "dropkick" or "uppercut" when

This whole time I thought those "lessons" were making me stronger in the dungeons. Perhaps mastery of those skills will help with fights at the Inn?

Will the game actually remember who took what from you? Taking your stuff
    back sounds cool!

Just to be sure.. Is there a difference between becoming a god and becoming King? I have not been aware of God'ing... Or am I getting this twisted? Can you rise from King to God?

So far, the main pleasure I get from being a King is that I can force a divorce, then bang the woman, because apparently married women won't cheat on their husbands. I'm trying to have a child with each different woman of the kingdom.

The only other benefit of being king that I have discovered is that under
Evil Deeds, when you Murder Innocent People, you never have any trouble with the police as a result.

What other benefits do you know of? (Besides Taxing people?)

Experience points just gets you to the next level.

But what if you're at a lower level, but you have the ultimate weaponry? Does that mean you can whoop anyone's ass?

Nah, not really. You can still lose. In theory, having a higher level means
you have more experience and should be harder to beat, but the laws of dungeoning don't really apply to Usurper!

Will the game actually remember who took what from you? Taking your stuff back sounds cool!

Yes! It is very satisfying getting your kit back from the asshole who killed you.

Just to be sure.. Is there a difference between becoming a god and becoming King? I have not been aware of God'ing... Or am I getting this twisted? Can you rise from King to God?

When you beat the "boss" in the highest dungeon level, you can choose to
begin again, or become a god and try to gain worshippers.

I agree with you though, being the king is the way to go!

Usurper is somewhat unfinished in places. Who knows where this game would
have gone had the original coder had his way. The source is out there too. I think Rick Parrish maintains it.

I tried to email jacob@dangarden.com, but the message was undeliverable. I
was just trying to send him some fanmail, and was going to tell him about my intention to create a BBS dedicated to his game.

Rick Parrish probably could care less.

Between the both of them, they could make this game mainstream, and probably make it profitable. It would be cool to see it as a mobile app, and of
    course, more fully developed.

I don't like the latest version even though it runs very fast.. it has a bug with the score file (some players don't show up) and they have known about
this for ages but haven't done anything about it. They have also disabled
some of the exploits that made the game fun and wildly unbalanced.

I've always felt Rick goes waaaaay beyond a lot of people for the hobby. I had an issue runnign the new gamesrv on XP, he essentially spent his work day fixing my bugs via email.

I bet if you email Rick he wouldn't ignore you. ;)

There's an issue with the Linux version of Usurper; it doesn't display
certain parts properly, but it throws the text at you in an uncomfortable
    way.

It would be really cool if someone like you had the source code and could
make updates, but the problem with that is Usurper is not very popular, and
it could prove to be a waste of your time.

The game has a minor explosion of players showing up at Black Flag at the moment, which is cool.

I know, he's an awesome guy. I give him lots of credit. Without him, I
wouldn't be into sysoping much these days, because I'm all about fTelnet.

I just meant that I wouldn't expect him to care much about Usurper because
he's not a frequent BBSer these days, and there's not much demand for the
game at the moment. (At least not that I know of.)

I discovered why it was doing that. The text files need to be converted to
unix format first using a util like dos2unix.

Yeah, I did try to compile it and didn't have any luck. I think some of the issue is that the filenames are all in upper case and the system calls to
other files like data files or ansi files are all done in lower case. I'm
not sure if that's the case or not, but from the one time I looked at it, I noticed that everything was still in UC; even on the linux version. I've
found that when people convert old dos programs to linux, it always has
    issues with the file case.

Hah! Probably not, because Zero Reader isn't a coder.

Actually, you can run it under linux fine with the binaries in the latest package. The problem I had on my old DayDream board was that the text was all double-spaced depending on what term you accessed it with. I think that's because the games text files need to be run through a dos2unix converter.

The DOS version of Usurper will run on Linux just fine via dosemu.

And Gryphon is right, the case issues are a pain!

I have the latest linux version running here (which included some text display fixes) and haven't noticed any problems lately. The ones I did notice Rick fixed up within about a week from telling him about them. He'll still update it

Is it generating the user list/score file properly? One of the problems I've noticed with all of the newer versions is that it doesn't include all the players in the list. The game still runs fine, but if you want to look up
other players you may or may not see them all.
