• Yet another Usurper msg

From Metalhead@46:1/104 to All on Thu Aug 25 01:51:01 2016
Ok, so I'm a bit obsessed with Usurper...

My BBS is temporarily down. My Mystic configuration is pretty boss, but, the adult theme was unappealing to the BBS community; my bad.

I'm definitely bringing my board back someday soon, but I'm looking for a meaningful theme. Maybe the adult thing would have worked if I had vintage porn, or something, which I do, but I'm too scared of copyright infringement, and I'd rather offer this community something more interesting..

So I was thinking about devoting my BBS to Usurper. I think by doing so, I
will attract at least a few people from the BBS community, and with a combination of fTelnet and my SEO skills, I could certainly attract a few, if not hundreds, of curious RPG nerds from the internet.

What do you all think? Would you be more likely to play Usurper if there were dozens of other players in the game? How much more likely? Because I'm down with giving this a try.

USURPER.COM is currently an unavailable domain, so I'd probably go with USURPER.ORG or .NET or something, probably whatever's cheaper.

/IF/ I were a usurper player then yes I would be more inclined to play on a BBS that was dedicated to the game. I've tried it in the past and it's just
    too much for me. ;)

Good idea I think. At least three of us will be there!

The cool thing about that game is how much you can customize the experience. You could really change anything and everything to make it your own, like Caphood does with his.

It's a door game. Quite a good one as I recall but I haven't had time for doors
in a while it's something that is still on my radar. I think it's free and/or opensource now but not really sure.

One of my favorite doors was always Operation Overkill ][ although, that one has been know to consume hours in a day.. ;)

    Yes

    About Usurper

Welcome to Usurper, a fantasy game filled with fast paced action, violence
and instant death. This game has only one purpose : to give you a good time without the need of reading any lengthy documentation. You can actually enter the game and go berzerk straight away. However, you can consider continuing
to read and perhaps learn something that can keep you alive for a while.

You can choose to play as a lonewolf adventurer/warrior who seek gain only
for yourself, and care little for anything else. You can also form teams in which you and your comrades fight for each other. In either case you should always concentrate your efforts on the dungeons. It's in these huge cave
areas that your fortune can be made, or your life end... There are over one hundred dungeons stretching from the top of the huge mountain, down to it's deepest level. It may be said at once that no creature has ever returned from the deeper levels. The ancient legends say that on Durunghins bottom there is
a "thing" so powerful that the worlds destiny can be altered with it. But the legends also say that the guardians of this "thing" goes beyond everything
your worst nightmares can bring forth... Well, no one has ever reached beyond the magic 90th level--you might be the first. You can take your team with you to the dungeons. It is almost always better to have more than one to face
    those monsters.

Completing the final challenge at the bottom of the huge mountain will reward you with immortalization in the chronicles. Your name will live forever.

It is important to note that in the dungeons, many strange creatures lurk around. Some will eventually approach you and offer different things. Your response will ultimately lead to either riches or to death...

If you don't fancy strolling down the dungeons, you can do other things. You can visit the Dormitory, where many of the characters take their rest. You
can kick them out of their beds and challenge them for a fight, or perhaps
try to murder them while they sleep...

You will always have opponents in this game, not just the monsters you challenge in the dungeons, but also computer controlled characters. These
guys are not always nice. Some will try to slain you just for the hell of it! The dungeon monsters, on the other hand, are always there waiting for you.

I see, this could be a risky thing to do.. But all it will cost me is like $12 to give it a shot. (for the domain name) I'll probably get bored enough
to try this crazy thing even though my sources say not to :)

Yea, that would be a good idea. I haven't customized anything my Usurper
game. I did gather a huge list of names of infamous murderers, which I was going to rename all the NPCs with, but my list wasn't long enough, so then I added to the list all the fictional murderers & bad guys that I could think
of, and I was like 75% there, but I still need more names to complete that
    job.

And like you said, I'd be doing all that for like 3 people's amusement. LOL

I'm going to give my BBS a makeover starting probably in a few weeks, when my kid starts school back up. I'm leaning towards the Usurper thing - as my
theme, or my pitch, possibly naming the BBS "Usurper."

You don't even need to spend the cash on a domain, just use a dynamic DNS service, like bbs.io. usurper.bbs.io would be dope.

Is this a good time to ask what Usurper is? :)

Yea dude, it's like L.O.R.D. but way more detailed and entertaining. It's a medieval battle game, but the object is different from LORD. It's hardcore,
and vile compared to LORD. You don't wink at Violet, but you might violate a Violet. LOL

It's full of avenues, and it's not a pile of crap like many doors that get compared to LORD.

I've been hooked on this game for about a year now. One thing that might
throw you off, is the weird questions it asks you when you enter the game..
But don't let those weird questions stop you from giving the game a fair
    shot.

There are not many other games in the world that I'm willing to play.

Wow, thanks for letting me know about that. I'd be using a dynamic DNS
service anyway, but I never realized I could do so without owning a domain.

Wouldn't that affect my plan to use fTelnet for web browser users?

Hey - if it gives you entertainment then $12 is one of the CHEAPER things
    you can do. :-)

Oh did you want to host a website with fTelnet?

I'm actually running a lightweight webserver on my Raspberry Pi at the
moment, so if you browse http://alco.bbs.io you just get a logo and a line of text. But I could put fTelnet there if I wanted.

I just refer people to my BBS profile on telnetbbsguide.com because it has ftelnet already installed

Oh did you want to host a website with fTelnet?

Yes, I was considering doing it to promote Usurper (and my BBS) on the web. I would go the Wordpress route again, but this time I'd be posting messages
about the game, and trying to get some rank with the keywords "RPG" or "old school games," etc.

I'm working on finding an easy domain name which can also be my BBS name, and with a .COM. This is part of the fun!

I'm trying to get her to try it. It would be interesting to hear/see what the game is like as a female character.

I managed to get her to try out my BBS, and she did really well for a first time ever BBSer. She even posted a message!

Once I get my BBS back up, I'm going to try to get my nephews into it too.

That's exactly how I host http://bbs.force9.org, except I use the embedded ftelnet which works pretty nicely. It's in github here if you want a nose: https://github.com/davestephens/bbs.force9.org.
