• War Ensemble gating agoranet to open internet

I'm sure you guys saw the spam post about Office 365 here. Turns out warensemble.com also gates the entire AgoraNet FTN to the open internet. I assume AgoraNet is intended to be membership based and not open like that, right?

Do you mean gates it as in to newsgroups?

Yeah, went and took a look. Seems that everything is visible but you actually have to sign in to the BBS in order to be able to reply or post a message, so that's someone that took the time to do so. Doesn't make it any better.

Doesn't look like it's gated to anything. He just has message base visibility open.

No, I mean gates as in you can view the content of posts on the open internet in a web browser without any authentication.

It's probably not a bad idea for the network coordinators in the respective othernets to make a decision and remind everyone regarding web availability
of echoes online - it's easy to miss, and easy to forget to check when you make changes to configurations.

Synchronet makes it pretty easy to restrict - anything that the guest user
can see when logged in is what an unauthenticated user sees when browsing
the web. I have mine set to allow local echoes as read-only and you have to log in to get to anything else.

I used to have a robots.txt file in place, but that's only using the honor system for crawlers.

Last time I tried I don't think that Synchronet or Magicka will allow me to view posts (or, at least, create them) without being logged into the web interface first, so that is good. :)

In this case the full contents of the network is out on the open internet, sadly.

Hmm, I can probably close it off. Sorry about that.

It's probably easiest to contact me through netmail, for what it's worth.
