• Favorite Retro Arcade Games?

    From nelgin@46:1/194 to Agoranet.AGN_GEN on Wed Jul 17 13:53:13 2024

Did you ever go to the arcade as a kid? Penny slots? Space Invaders?
    PacMan?

What were some of your favorite games to play.

There was one I recall called Phoenix. It was a 3 stage game where
you'd go through a wave of killing bird like creatures. The second had
these eggs going across the screen that would hatch to larger birds.

The third was a spaceship you had to break through and destroy.

    What are your arcade memories?

That one was awesome on the Intellivision. Atari screwed it up.

Defender. I got too good at that, to the point that the machine would overflow and the world below would go away for a couple of levels. I think I got a score of 1.6 million?

I had to quit after that.

The other game I liked was Tempest.

I went to arcades fairly rarely, and I played arcade games more often at restaurants that sometimes had a few arcade games set up in the restaurant. Some of my favorite arcade games were Joust, Ivan "Ironman" Stewart's Super Off-Road, Centipede, and pinball.

I tend to be like that with games. We had a TRS-80 clone at school
called a Video Genie. Black & white with block graphics. There was a
simple space invaders type game and I was the first person to "clock"
the score. I had to walk away in the end because it was just too easy
    for that 11 year old.

I did have to cross my arms though, I liked to do left and right with
my left hand and fire with my right, so left hand on ZX and right on
Return. I don't know if I could even do that these days.

Those three are probably some of the most memorable for me as well. I spent a lot of time playing both of those series, and now my son has MK11 installed on his PC. Craaaazy. :)

Pinball was also huge. 'Fun House' comes to mind as my all time favorite because the creepy doll would talk shit to you while you played, but there were plenty of other good ones back then, too.

I like Root Beer Tapper. It's a cool game, and my local arcade has it. the cabinet design is really "Old-Fashioned", complete with the wood grain. I also enjoy Q-Bert. Some of these newer pinball games are pretty incredible. They fit so many loops and oddball places to hit the ball into what, a 3' by 18" play area. :)

Pretty sure I just mentioned somewhere about my favorite of all time, was called "Funhouse". Was basically kind of a Chucky doll that made fun of you while you played. It's pretty old, kinda like me.. but if you Google it, I think you can still find it.

I think it would be cool to have a pinball machine, but they are definitely expensive, and I'm also not sure if I'd want one taking up the space in my house.

There's a place in my area that has a crap-ton of pinball machines and other arcade games that are (almost) all set for free play, and you can play as much as you want for a $22 entry fee (and you can even leave and come back if you want, in the same day):

My wife and I went there a couple months ago, and we thought it was pretty fun. Pinball has always been one of my favorite types of arcade games, so it was cool to see all the various pinball machines they have.

I never played it at the arcade until recently. We have a place called
Free Play, which has a bunch of retro games all set on free play. You

    What are your arcade memories?

Loved going to the arcades back in the '80s. There were several in my area, but my favorite was some miles away. In fact, it took me two buses to get to it, but it was worth it.

It was called Rick's Gameroom where you could get 20 tokens for a dollar, and they offered hot foot (burgers, hot dogs, fries, etc) and great prices. You could easily spend the whole day there for under 10 bucks, and I often did.

It wasn't a huge place, but there was plenty of games to go around. They had all the current favs: Donkey Kong, Centepede, Frogger, etc. My favorites were Star Wars, Star Trek, Frogger, Centepede, Joust...and my best scoring game, Tempest; never got enough Tempest.

It was a sad time when the arcade bubble burst. Within a couple months time, practically all the arcades in my area shut down. Rick's was the last to go, lasting about another six months. It was like some digital pandemic that spread throughout the industry.

Fortunately, many of those classic games, including Tempest, can be played online...no tokens needed. But somehow, it's just not the same.

True, and they also have a pretty good bar with some interesting beer selections. Unfortunately you have to "pay to get in" not just pay to play so you can't just go sit at the bar and drink.

Know the feeling. I paid a fiver and that was many years ago when VR was still in it's infancy. The graphics were crude and the framerate was about 15/sec. On top of that, the headset wasn't made for people wearing glasses. From what I can tell, that situation hasn't changed any.

wearing glasses. From what I can tell, that situation hasn't changed
    any.

I remember when Dragon's Lair came out. It was 2 quid a pop and lasted
    about 3 seconds.

Did you ever go to the arcade as a kid? Penny slots? Space Invaders? PacMan?
What were some of your favorite games to play.

I was part of the second resurgence of arcades with the release of Street Fighter II. I spent a lot of time and money on that generation of arcades, mostly fighting games, and racing games. I was too young for the golden era of arcades, but did experience many of those types of games on consoles like the Atari 2600, and older computers like the VIC20 and C64.

Defender. I got too good at that, to the point that the machine would overflow and the world below would go away for a couple of levels. I

I never played the arcade version back in the day, (pre MAME) however that was one of the best games for the Atari 2600.

I've always wanted a pinball machine, but could never get myself to fork over thousands of dollars for one. :)

You can now build virtual pinball machines. It basically consists of a large flat screen display, in a pinball fashion table, I believe running pin-MAME. I am sure it would be still quite pricey to build, but at least you can get thousands of games to play with it. I even think you can get a tilt sensor, and a second screen for marquees and scores.
