Thanks Mike, I knew you'd probably be the one to first reply.

- I didn't even pay attention to whether this conf was listserved or
not.

I forwarded the original to #121.

FYI - finally got wcrepair to run OK, wcserver starts now, ran wcconfig
to mod the paths to new install, problem now is wcsmtp and online will
not start - looking into logs and error msgs reveals '... procedure
entry point could not be located...' in wcsvr2.dll.

Searching SSI msgs for relevant details.

(am posting copy of this to conf#121)

I have done re-installs and recovers several times over the

years,

never seen this problem - but I've also never done it on windows

7, I

must be getting old and missing something.

Installed wins to temp machine from v6.1 451.4 CD, initial

updates from

the install ran, initial login performed.

Restored \config, \data, and \http* dirs from my available

backups.

Ran AUP to get up to date

Run wcRepair -

Select configuration database, press start, returns
"Repair completed successfully"
Click OK

Select user database, press start, returns
"[X] could not open user database"
Click OK

Select file database, press start, returns
"[X] could not open file database"
Click OK

Select message database, press start, returns
"[X] could not open userconf.dat"
Click OK
Click close

Tried starting wcServer to run wcconfig, returns
"The Wildcat! Server could not start because of the following

error:

!Critical: Could not open user database"

Now what???

Off to uninstall and reinstall with 'runas administrator' for CD setup/install. will try to run wcconfig before restoring my data,

then

run repair, then AUP...

+ shipping: HP Z400's - 1yr warranty, 1@ MS Windows 7 pro

64bit/8GB

1TB,

the other @ MS Windows 7 pro 32bit/4GB 1TB. One of these will

replace

crashed unit.

Seeking recommendations / suggestions ASAP, reply here; my

site is

down

temporarily so list/responses will be monitored here at the

I probably should have asked Mike P. directly, but open to

all...

#1 - Which is more appropriate - 32 or 64 bit? The machine

will be

for

Wildcat and LAN server, as well as some graphics and authoring

work

for

hosted websites (8 virtual domains) while occasionally seated

directly at

the box. 64bit scares me, 32bit limits me.

While I understand the most obvious advantage of the 64bit /

8gigs

(expandable) and 1TB (which I will add to) - which would be

more

compatible/suitable. I don't use 16bit apps anymore, but have

some

32 bit

favs - photoshop, Corel draw and photopaint.

#2 - Under windows 7, what network setting for the wildcat

(WAN)

NIC? -

Home, work, or public? Any other firewall/security settings?

Already using Work network for LAN connection on the old Dell

added

a NIC

for WAN - this box will be a temp WC machine until replacement

box

arrives

later this week or early next depending on when and what

responses I

get

#3 - recommendations for software or hardware firewall;

inexpensive,

reliable, and relatively easy to config and modify - add

rules, set

individual IPs or IP blocks, intrusion protection. Sygate was

GREAT!

Sygate Personal Firewall WILL NOT run in windows 7 - I can

install,

but get

errors and it will not run. I could, but do not wish to setup

an

additional

box (using Linux) just to run as a dedicated firewall.

#4 - If by chance I can get the backup drive data recovered,

is

there a way

to merge the data (mail, files) with the new/interim data?

(#5 FYI) Already purchased 2 external USB HDDs for use as

additional

backups - it is not a good feeling when one's archiving falls

victim

to

maladies... Maybe I can get the old drive's data recovered but

not

inexpensive - now opting for extra redundancy and knowledge

gained

from

experience... backups from now on will be 1 internal (separate

HDD),

2

separate external copies AND KEEP THEM UP TO DATE!

The old setup has been VERY reliable and trustworthy for

several

years now,

good-bye Old Paint, gonna miss ya.

And Kudos to SSI for making a product that has stood so well

through

the

years, looking forward to Catapult update once I get the newer

machine and

rebuild the installation.
