    I haven't tried connecting to any boards via SSH. Wouldn't that just give me file directory access?

    no it's just an encrypted protocol and you see the bbs same as telnet if you have the right client.

    No, SSH on a BBS is basically the same as telnet but with encryption. You'd still have the ANSI terminal interface.
