NRA Life member here, but on the other side of the continent. NRA does countless good for the rights of gun owners. When you join, expect lots of junk mail from them asking for additional "support" (=$$$), but ignore that long enough if you choose and it goes away eventually.. Can't blame them for trying. :)

Next time someone says something bad about the NRA and its influence, you can say - "Thats because me and 4.3 million other freedom loving American's support them" - Not many organizations can say that.

I don't have a gun yet, but thinking of getting one. Just neat that we
have the right that we have. So what got you started either owning a
gun or to join the NRA?

I went to a local range a few times with a close friend, then decided to go th rough the arduous procedures of getting a rifle/shotgunlicense in NYC - 8 months
later, I had a license, then bought my first rifle.

Then I decided to join the range my friend inroduced me to. It was a requirement to be a member of the NRA (a great idea). I soon signed up for
the easy pay life membership and never regretted any of those decisions.

Then silly me went to apply for my pistol license in NYC.. another 8 months later, numerous trips to NYPD HQ, interviews, more forms, $325 and I finally had
    my first pistol.

NYC is not friendly to law abiding gun owners.. Getting one illegally is
    much easier. - thanks libs!
