• Legally broadcasting unlicenced

From Choco@VERT/DMINE to All on Tue Aug 18 04:43:20 2015
I have an idea here that I want to run by you guys before I attempt it. I want to make sure it's legal. According to the FCC Law I read, it is legal to broadcast unlicenced as long as the radius doesn't extend 20 ft, and it doesn't go into military owned frequencies. This is what I want to atempt:

Using th Raspberry Pi Microcomputer, I will set up a mobile transmitter mounted to a bike. This transmitter (going to try to buld a transiever, but it will probably just be a transmitter) will broadcast on FM. I haven't decided on a specific frequency yet. Using this, I will broadcast a variety of things from music to SSTV images. Biking around, I will broadcast whatever I want to cars and buildings nearby, I will also be telling the cars a web address of locations I plan to be/go to. I think this would be a fun little thing to do, but I do not know if it is entierly legal. Can anyone help me out with this?

Don't you have something more constructive to do with your time?
Come on, everyone has their hobbies (including us hams!)

As far as OP's project, I see a few issues. First of all, who would be listening? At the kinds of speeds you'd be riding at on your bike, 20ft. isn't very much distance at all. Even other cars would be very unlikely to tune to your frequency by coincidence, and even if they did, I doubt they'd react kindly to it (most of the populous still has some idea of 'pirate radio').

The other problem is verifying that your transmitted signal /only/ goes 20ft. I don't know if you know this already, but the length/type of the antenna and where it's positioned has a massive effect on how far a transmitted signal goes, even disregarding power levels. This includes having the antenna close to any conductive objects, including the human body (where it would probably be very close to, if you're on a bike). If the FCC comes knockin' on your door, do you have the know-how (and uber-expensive test gear) to show them that your signal drops to undetectability at 20ft.? And for that matter, what if a subharmonic of your signal happens to interfere with something when your main carrier doesn't?

These things being said, if you're careful about using a very low-range antenna and you exercise caution about, well, broadcasting who you are and what you're doing to every law enforcement agency ever, then you probably won't hurt anyone. IANAL and YMMV, but I'd say go for it - it sounds fun!

Nice idea, do those car FM transmitters that plug into in your headphone jack of a phone or mp3 player go more than 20 feet? Most mobile applications I've seen with a pi are receiving rather than transmitting. )

They barely go 5 feet, and it's hard to find a frequency that doesn't get trod upon by a terrestrial station.

    Now, Bluetooth might work.

he needs to have a collander on his head with lazers shooting in all directions. the lasers will transmit the radio broadcast while downing airplanes and shooting squirrels.
