What do you think of D-STAR? I would love a D-STAR radio - when it comes to upgrading my HF radio, I'm thinking of an IC-7100. Very good value for what you get really.

It depends on how close you live to the network. DStar just sounds clearer. My other-half
doesn't like all the repeater noises and CW id's when in the car. You don't have that with DStar.
There is no drop out like echolink or having to wait for all the repeaters to come up. You don't
have to ID on DStar. It either works really good or not at all. Talk just as good global or
local when mobile. No Squelch noise at all. But if your gateway goes down it isn't any better
then the standard 2 meter radio. You can make your own gateway.. I use a clubs gateway about 50
miles away. People can track you APRS.. it will crosslink into standard APRS.. only tracks as good
as the repeater coverrage though. You can send emails with it. You can kind of IRC with it. My
clucb lets any member borrow one to test out. People that have retired and can't have HF gear
where they live use it. That's a powerfull mic when you can key up with 5 watts or less and talk
to the world. Some people use a computer phone setup or DVAP rasberry pi or what ever, I prefer
the radio. Pretty good radio.. I like the crossband repeat.. Turn you handheld into a 60 watt
radio.. I talk off my tower on my hand held allot.. but I dont have a DStar handheld. That's what
I can think of. Mostly availiable in major cities. You can bet you can hit one 50 plus miles out
mobile in a car and talk to mobiles in england or your friends back home.. The weather service
here use it for weather spotting also. Big, Big world wide nets on sunday. Has a last heard
feature.. you can tell when a callsign was last on.. anyway...

I'm in a big city at the moment and I think D-STAR coverage is pretty good here. I'm (hopefully) moving in the next month or so and will be moving quite close to a D-STAR repeater so that might push me to investigate it a bit more. Most of the guys I know with D-STAR love it. I was having a look at FreeDV the other day too - using a computer to encode/decode voice and send it directly to the radio as data. Supposed to be good on HF but I couldn't find anyone else using it when I was trying.

I certainly like the trunking that's available with D-STAR. I often travel to the US and the idea of being able to talk to people back home but still using RF is a nice concept.

One day I'll treat myself :-)
