I realize that D-Star can sometimes be a bit of a sensitive subject, but I
was wondering if anyone out there has any experience with a DV Dongle. For a few reasons, it's the only way I'm going to be able to get "on the air".

I was wondering if anyone has one and what your thoughts are about it, the level of activity, ability to setup, etc.

I have a DV Dongle, works well. While the official "DVTool" software does work quite well, if you use third party software, you can access more functionality (DVTool only supports DPlus linking). I'm using ircDDBGateway by G4LKX for network connectivity with DummyRepeater connected to the dongle to access the system. DummyRepeater with the DV Dongle looks like an end user radio to the system, and I can callsign route (to ircDDB users), as well as link using DPlus, DExtra (XRFnnn), DCS and CCS protocols
... 2 + 2 = 5 for extremely large values of 2.

It sounds interesting, I just wish the price was a bit better. It seems that the price is pretty much the same everywhere and never moves much.

Is there a lot of activity, or is it limited to certain days / times?

Depends where you go. Some of the reflectors get a bit of traffic. I sometimes listen to REF003 C, which is one of the major Australian traffic hubs, which gets a bit of traffic.

Depends where you go. Some of the reflectors get a bit of traffic. I sometimes listen to REF003 C, which is one of the major Australian traffic hubs, which gets a bit of traffic.

I have a DV4mini - they seem to be the most economical solution and they are pretty flexible. I initially got it for DMR use but when I bought an IC-7100 a couple of weeks ago, I have been using it on D-STAR since. I've not listened to REF003 C, but there's always activity on REF001 C. I've never struggled to find someone to have a QSO with on there on D-STAR yet!

This should allow for more flexability in reflector (ref/xref/dcs) connections.


I tend to run my DV* devices in linux (and most of the time on raspberry Pis) and they have been great. Not sure which part of the world yuor in, but reflectors I tend to goto are REF001C and REF030C. Although at times I can be found on Fusion or DMR systems.

Have fun with DSTAR!

BTW: Out of all the digital voice modes I have used, I do like the flexability of DSTAR the most.

My DV Dongle was bought when they first came out, and were the only AMBE option available. I went down the G4KLX route, because I plan on putting up a full blown repeater (homebrew) system, and I can incorporate a dummy repeater module as a non RF form of access.

D-STAR is the only one I've been able to fully utilise. To utilise any other mode, I have to build local infrastructure first. :)
