I've been using an AM/FM/MW/Shortwave handheld device and have been able to listen around world which in itself just seems like a cool hobby. At first, I read the manual and because it's digital works more like a computing device rather than clockwork. Clear MW yet needing to know antenna/survival stuff about Shortwave. It's a coded environment which could make communication without a microphone easier. There's some underground lit. on it around the web. Searching for bands through automatic search forward on screen. Finding something to listen to always cool. You coudl also connect a computer to shortwave equipement either using USB or otherwise. The 10.1 to 10.9 diagnostics codes are pretty cool like for example 10.1 is weak signal 10.2 is strong signal. 5 at end of frequency useful in distress.
