is there any signifigant difference from movingt from nvidia to ati?
The game I bought says it needs a 8800 geforce or a 2900 radeon.

I was thinking of moving to a radeon 5450, i currently use a 8500 geforce.

Well, my brother-in-law is a Windows geek & he swears by nvidia. I've never used nvidia myself but I've heard good things. When I told my brother-in-law that my ATI video card died & I bought another ATI
(Radeon 4650), he told me it was a good choice, so...

...dunno...google it. Do some research, I guess...

I'm running dual nvidia GTX 260s with great success. I've never been an fan
of ATI. In my experience, ATI performs poorly on games I want to play. That being said, I could probaly find an equal number of games that choke on nividia cards. To each his own really. But, for my money, I'll take nvidia.

I personally do NOT like anything from ATI/AMD. Stick with nVidia.

Totally agree, and doubly so if you [might someday] run linux.

    Why do you say that?

I've had MUCH better luck with Nvidia drivers and utility software than with ATI, even with vendor supplied binaries. It's a shame really, I had always been a great fan of ATI boards in my Windows machines. It was always a nightmare trying to get that same hardware to work with Linux.

That said, Ubuntu's restricted driver management seems to make the situation WORLDS better than it used to be.

Why, have you had better luck with ATI?

Well, I'd have to say I can't really give you an educated answer. I've pretty much stayed with ATI over the last 6 or 7 years & I've never had an NVidia. As I said in an earlier post, my brother-in-law (who's worked in clean rooms making cpus & stuff & is a Microsoft Fanatic) swerars by Nvidia...but the guys I know (who aren't dorks like my brother-in-law) swear by ATI.

The only problem I've ever had with ATI is after 5 years the fan on my video card died...but like a good card, it over heated & shut my motherboard down before it fried.

I turned it back on hours later, it ran for a few minutes, then my system powered down 'cuz the video card overheated the board.

(Yes, I know it was the motherboard that was smart, not the video card).

Anyway, after a week of frustration (& the NTLDR thread people are still replying to) I got it replaced...With ANOTHER ATI card.

Works great...gives me all the video effects I need in linux...still haven't booted Windows and installed the drivers there, but then again...if you're a real computer scientist, who needs windows?

Like "Confidence" said, "Oxygen's for LOSERS".

(Same could be said for Windows)

    -Rassilon...

-I've never done good things...I've never done bad things...I never did anything out of the blue...

im going to a GeForce GT240 from my 8500 it might cost extra but at least i'll be able to not worry about upgrading my card for the next 2 years.

I can't say as I've had much trouble with the 3650 I'm using now in Linux. I can't speak for Ubuntu, but I was able to install it on OpenSuSE 11.1 (I
know; time to upgrade) without much trouble. Kernel upgrades are a pain
since you have to build/install the kernel module again, but I remember
having to do the same thing with the nVidia card.

I do (vageuely) recall that this wasn't always the case with ATI cards.
There was one particular generation of cards that took them forever to
support in Linux. Can't remember the particulars, though.

Why, have you had better luck with ATI?

I certainly have. The Linux systems I used newish video cards in were MAME and Freevo boxes. For the first, nVidia isn't even a contender as it can't do the video modes needed. For the second, nVidia wouldn't support the video outputs and modes required or correct scan adjustment.

Been hashed over a few times... but between an nv8500 and an ati5450, are you going to gain much performance? I wouldn't suggest upgrading to less than an ati5750 or an nv gt240. I'm using an ATI 5770 now, and it works well enough, a few of the apps I have that could use CUDA aren't as quick, but hoping OpenCL takes hold before long. nVidia is about to do another GPU refresh, so may want to wait a month if you can hold out.
