• Vista Internet Problems

From MIKE POWELL@VERT/CAPCITY2/CAPCITY to ALL on Wed Mar 31 17:15:00 2010
A friend of mine has a laptop that runs Vista.

Recently, they have become unable to get web pages to load on their
machine. They get a "connectivity error." I had them test a few other
things. They are not able to get pages via IE or Firefox, and are not able
    to telnet anywhere.

However, they can PING other "foreign" systems fine, and they are able to
get updates via Windows update and (I think) Jave update.

They've tried the previous restore point, and it didn't help.

    Any ideas??

    Mike

If I understand your problem, they can't pull up websites by URL but can ping IP's on the internet? If that's the case, it very much sounds like a problem with DNS resolution.

Check to make sure it has DNS servers assigned from whatever is handling DHCP, or if it's set statically, manually enter either the ISP supplied DNS or use a public service like Google's DNS. Just don't use OpenDNS... but that's a seperate discussion ;).

Well, it sounds to me that you're doing everything right... :) Can't you install a new OS on your netbook?

Actually, they can PING "URL addresses," example: google.com. Not it's IP address, but the "in English" address. I would assume they'd need a proper
    DNS to do that.

They can't pull up websites, though.
