I've heard some commercials recently saying Kodak has some inkjet printers ou
    >now that use inexpensive ink.. That might be something to look into.

My experience is that the more you pay for the printer the cheaper the
ink is. It has nothing to do with the actual cost of the ink of course.
They just make the cartridges fit just the one printer and sell those
cheaper since they've already made their money on the printer sale..
I've noticed it in printers by the same manufacturer. A plain black
ink cartridge for a $39 printer was over $40 and the same one for their
    $300 printer was about $23..

Also, hard to say if this is B.S. or not since I can't test it myself..
(I just have a laser printer) ..but recent commercials by H.P.
I believe said that their ink lasts 60% longer than cheaper inks.
Obviously a shot at refilled and refilling cartridges but I'd wonder
if they could say that if there weren't at least Some truth to it..

That makes sense.. I always thought ink should be fairly cheap, and I wonder if it really costs enough for the manufacturer to make the ink cartridges for them to justify being as expensive as they are.

I suppose it depends on what they mean by "cheaper inks". That could mean anything. Marketers can be fairly clever in making things sound more of a big deal than they are. When they say "cheaper inks", perhaps they mean really cheap inks compared to which HP's would definitely last longer, which is stating the obvious in a way - Cartridges that hold less ink are typically cheaper..

No, someone in here was refilling cartridges and mentioned that good
quality ink is about $60 a *Gallon* so the cartridges themself would
have to be pretty costly to make if they aren't making $30 profit on
    every cartridge they sell..

I just don't do ink printers... Color laser printers have gotten really well priced in the past couple years, still a lot more expensive than inkjet, but they last longer, and the long term cost per sheet is pretty decent.

I don't do much printing so I went with a B&W Laser last time.
It won't clog up like ink as it gets old or dry out like the
ribbons on the old DM printers did. If I need colour I'll go to
one of the photo printer places and get them done there.
They have much higher end printers than most people can justify
buying for home use and they don't charge all that much...
