Since my family lacked a blu ray player i donated my playstation 3, but since they bought their own to use on their tv, is it doable to use a hdmi switch for my PC monitor so i could use my 24 inch widescreen to play video games and watch movies on?
And can a PS3 use a computer lcd monitor well?

I have it on good authority that HDMI switches are available. My wife got
one off the Internet a few years ago for some reason (she thought it was a
good deal). It even came with a spiffy remote to switch sources.

I don't know why the PS3 wouldn't work with your monitor. I've been tempted
to try this with my 22" monitor as well, but I've wondered how well it would work since my monitor's native resolution is 1680x1050--not the usual (1920x1080?) resolution I suspect the PS3 will want. Therefore, I'm not
sure what it would do (maybe it's science experiment time?). I'm also not
sure if the monitor is required to be HDCP compliant just to watch Blu-Ray
or if all video output is encrypted.

Several months ago, I read about this somewhere, and seen a video about it. Don't remember where... might be referenced on Slashdot.

Anyways, the PS3 does use some kind of encryption on the video. Some TVs,
or maybe it was a certain TV, wasn't always syncing properly with the PS3.
The fix for it was to simply unplug the cable, and plug it back in. It only occurred when the PS3 was first turned on (or maybe when the game first started).

No idea how those HDMI switches work, but it seems to me that it would be
    WAY too easy to defeat copy protection by being able to hook up a switch;
I think you'd have to have a monitor with native HDMI to hook up the PS3.

I hadn't considered that. The switch I have is very likely a passive switch and I do recall hearing, just as you have, that the encryption is very sensitive to being messed with. My brother's TV had issues with the HDMI signal on his DVD player for the same reason; an occasional glitch would f
eeze the display and he would have to power cycle the TV. So yeah, I can see how switching sources might create problems.

Did he try reseating the hdmi cable on his dvd player? Sucks to have to actually power cycle the TV. Seems like that would shorten its lifetime.

I can't completely recall the details, but we did eventually find his DVD player at fault. Reading around the Internet I heard of other DVD players having similar problems and it came down to the HDCP stream getting
corrupted in some way. Of course, as you suggested, a flaky cable could be
a cause of said corruption, but *surely* we eliminated that first. I
brought my PS3 over which worked flawlessly, and I *think* we used the same cable. Now that you mention it, I'm not so sure now.

The good news is that it gave him an excuse to get a Blu-Ray player and as
far as I know he's not had a moment's trouble with it. I think he moved the DVD player to a CRT where the HDMI compatibility problems aren't an issue.
