• Luna theme for Windows 7

Hi - I use Windows 7, and recently I've been thinking it would be nice to have Windows XP's Luna theme with it. Does anyone know of a good way to do that? recently I found this online, which has a Luna theme for Windows 7: http://satukoro.deviantart.com/art/Luna-port-to-Windows-7-Aero-136960235 However, I wasn't able to fully install it, since it requires replacing explorer.exe, and Windows 7 doesn't give permission to mess with the Windows files.

    Hey Nightfox,

Hi - I use Windows 7, and recently I've been thinking it would be nice to have
Windows XP's Luna theme with it.

The way I get around this is to modify the registry to point to another shell (more or less the unix equivalent of editing the /path/to/sh in the /etc/passwd).

Run regedit in administrator mode (right click, run as administrator) and modify the hive here: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>Microsoft>Windows NT>CurrentVersion>Winlogon. You may want to export a backup before, but it's an easy hack. Change exporer.exe there to suit you.

I think you can do this at the HKEY_LOCAL_USER hive and it might even have the added benefit of scoping the shell.exe change to the user, however I haven't actually tried this.

Hope that helps and hope all's well otherwise, been a while since we spoke :)

    Kind regs,

Oops, forgot to mention but fairly obvious:

    - if you want to jump to the new shell immediately, kill explorer.exe and run (from file menu in task manager) the new shell.
    - otherwise, logoff and log back in.

    Regs,

I don't know what "Luna" is, though to be honest, I've never been a fan of Themes and such. They just tend to take up more memory. Not effiecent.
If you need to replace explorer.exe, the easiest way is to install easypeasy
on a thumb drive or memory card, then boot from it and copy the new explorer.exe ontop of the old. It's how I remove the really stubbern viruses that manage to find the access to get into places that they shouldn't have access to muck with...

Luna is the name of the cartoonish theme that is the default in Windows XP.

it's not bad looking and doesnt bog down the computer if you have a half
decent one. runs just fine on a computer that's about 5years old.

regarding copying another shell over explorer.exe, that shit may have worked okay with windows 95/98 but i wouldnt try it with today's windows OS.

That's true, and I wondered why they recommended doing that in the guide I was reading, particularly if Windows 7 won't let you. I found a different guide that offered a different solution, using a piece of software to patch some UI-related DLL files: http://www.askvg.com/how-to-install-use-3rd-party-custom-themes-in-windows-7

While not technically OOTB, the Royale Noir shell is nice. It's not a far
cry from the default Fisher-Price XP shell, but darker and much better
    looking with dark backgrounds.

I often find the new Windows themes hard to get used to.. Aero just bugs me for some reason..
