• Reducing hard drive noise level

From Nightfox to All on Sun Mar 6 17:29:35 2011
    Hi all -

Recently I bought a new PC case to replace the HP case that my computer originally came with (I don't like the non-standard cases from HP, etc.). I like the new case, but one thing I've noticed is that the sound of the hard drive working is more noticeable. With the other case, I could barely hear the hard drive. Is there any good way to reduce the hard drive noise?

Get an SSD :). I put one in my Macbook and it's completely silent with the exception of the fan that will come on from time to time.

If you need more storage space you may want to look at a new drive. Some of the "green" drives from Western Digital and others are supposed to be quieter than the more power hungry variants.

:) I thought about getting a new drive, but SSDs are still fairly small in size. My current hard drive is 1TB, and the largest SSD I've seeen is a lot smaller. I've also thought about putting a notebook hard drive in the PC, but I feel like there should be a less expensive alternative, since I was using the same drive in the other case.

A lot of mid-high end cases have rubber grommets that HDDs mount through... you could try a 5.25 to 3.5" adapter, which will move the drive out a little farther.. another option is rubber/foam insulation on the sides of your case... nzxt hush (hu001) is a great/quiet case, you can still find it around online. Antec cases are pretty good for noise levels as well... running a cooler master 690 for my desktop.
