• CD-R burn speed limit

I recently replaced the CD/DVD burner in my computer with a blu-ray burner. Today I burned a backup onto a CD-R disc, and my burner software (Nero) would only burn up to 8x on the disc, whereas the previous drive would go up to 40x. This burner is supposed to be able to burn CDs up to 48x. The disc I was burning to was a Sony CD-R. I know that CD-Rs have different compatibility with different drives, but only being able to burn up to 8x seemed a little odd when the drive is supposed to be able to burn a CD up to 48x. Is that normal?

The new (blu-ray) burner is made by LG, and the previous one was made by HP.

Yeah that is normal. Depends on the medium and some medium will not
allow burning at super high speeds.
