Commodore is making a Windows PC that fits inside a boxy beige shell that >looks exactly like its original C64.

The 8-bit machine was released in 1982, had 64 kilobytes of memory and became >one of the best-selling computers ever.

Commodore's updated version will run Windows 7 but also has an emulator >capable of playing games written for its ancestor.

Commodore has started taking orders for the C64x, priced at $595 (B#364), and >said the machines would ship between May and June. It is expected to appear in >shops later in the year.

The machinebs internal hardware will be based around a dual-core Intel Atom >D525, a chip typically found in notebook computers.

And yes, it does still all fit inside the keyboard case.

I've seen that, and I think the idea is really cool. Besides looking like an old Commodore 64, it's a small computer that would not take up much desktop space.

Commodore is making a Windows PC that fits inside a boxy beige shell that
looks exactly like its original C64.

Yeah, the news has been out about Commodore USA for a while now, although
most Commodore users have been speculating that it would just be vaporware, especially since the original CUSA site looked like a child made it...lol.

It looks much more professional now, of course, and they are shipping the actual product, with more modern cases to soon follow. They are attempting
to stick with the old Commodore brand plan of shipping slim computers. Unfortunately, while the 64 lookalike computers *might* do decently with
people who want a retro look, and old Commodore users, I don't really see
the other two form factors selling well. As someone else pointed out, why would someone pay $600 for a system that performs about the same as a $300 computer? (ie, netbooks)

What I would like to see is some innovation coming out of Commodore USA.
I don't know much about their legal status and brand agreements, but if
they could take the latest Amiga OS (which does run on some modern hardware that is still being produced) and expand it further...basically streamlining its look and feel, and then throw in the ability to virtualize operating systems, or run their apps natively...well, then they might be able to
    survive more longterm.

Otherwise, I only see them lasting a few years, or just scraping by as a
    fringe franchise.

I think what will really make me curious about them is when they finally get the new Commodore OS out that they're currently working on. Hopefully they can give the cult of Steve Jobs a run for their money again...

Yeah, I'm curious about the new OS too even if I think wit would be really difficult to them to create something really so original and cool to have any chance of getting a large user base. It should be something really different from what we have today; there are already so much stable options when you are looking for an OS that I don't think will be easy to create an alternative, but again it's only hard, not impossible :) I can't wait to take a look at the new Commodore OS and to own a new C64!

About 12-15 years ago, BeOS was in development as a new OS built from scratch to support multimedia applications. It was indeed something different, and it was very responsive too. It didn't take off though.. These days it's hard indeed to come up with an OS to gain a large userbase.

From what I read, it sounded like he new C64 is just supposed to contain some kind of emulator to run old C64 software, and the emulator works like the old C64 OS? It was my understanding that you could dual-boot that between that and Windows or whatever other OS you wanted to install on it.

Oh, well that would make sense but reading at: http://www.commodoreusa.net/CUSA_OS.aspx

it would seem a really brand new OS with his own features:
"with our new Commodore operating system, a distinctive, attractive, advanced and stable operating system experience, that will come pre-loaded with dozens of the latest and greatest productivity, creativity and education software the open source world has to offer. Featuring dozens of exciting 3D games, the latest web browsing technology, a Microsoft Word compatible Office Suite, advanced graphical manipulation programs, 3D raytracing software, advanced software development tools and languages, photo and movie editing and sound and music composition programs, there is no task too big or too small for a Commodore or AMIGA to accomplish.

Feeling nostalgic? Commodore OS will also be classic Commodore compatible, able to run classic 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit era software via emulation. A beautiful user interface allows you to easily peruse games for the Commodore PET, Vic20, C16, C64, C128 and AMIGA. No need to bother with floppy disks, as many games can be legally puchased and downloaded from the internet directly on to your computer."

Maybe it could be another linux flavour customized by Commodore; who knows!

We just have to wait and see :)

I don't know, but since Macs also use Intel CPUs and very similar hardware,
I'd guess it might work on Macs too - but I don't know for sure.

It's a mini-itx based PC with a custom case around it. Cool idea in general.
