• Monitor sees no signal after PC on for hours

From Nightfox to All on Sat May 7 09:11:33 2011
    Hi all -

There's an annoying issue with my PC that I've noticed since I bought it about 2 years ago - Sometimes I'll leave it on for a while (while it's downloading something or performing some other long task) and turn the monitor off if I'm not around, and after doing this, sometimes when I come back after some hours and turn the monitor back on, the monitor doesn't see a signal from the PC, even after I move the mouse or press a key on the keyboard (in case the screen saver was activated). If I reset the PC, the picture shows up on the screen as normal. This has happened with 2 different monitors now (I upgraded the monitor recently). Since the picture comes back after I reboot the PC, it suggests to me that it's caused by an OS/software issue. I thought Windows might be set to turn off the monitor after some time, but I checked Windows' power settings, and I have it set to not turn the monitor off. I'm not sure yet what would cause this, and I don't like having to hard-reset my PC to get the picture back. And, it only happens sometimes.. I've left this PC on with the monitor off for hours at a time many times, and most of the time, the video signal is fine after I come back and turn the monitor back on.

    These are the PC's specs:
    - CPU: AMD Phenom x4
    - Motherboard: MSI MS-7548
    - RAM: 8GB
    - Video card: Nvidia GeForce 9500GGS w/ 512MB (PCI Express x16)

Does anyone have an idea about what might cause this?

Most likely a video driver issue. Have you tried reinstalling the driver?

Also, have you checked your event log?

I did update the driver not too long ago, but not because of this issue. This issue had been happening since before I updated the driver though.

Do you think it could be caused by the video card overheating? A little while ago I installed a program (SpeedFan) that tells you the temperatures of various chips and speeds of various fans in your system, and it said my video card was a bit hot. I was a little concerned, but my PC is fairly free of dust inside, and the video card fan still works..

is your video card getting hot? if so open tower and put a fan in font of it .... it helps here... also see if your coolant is running out in your system, if so, need to replace that....

I've had that happen before. As long as you turn your monitor off when you're not using your computer (I always do).. turn off all your power management stuff. No screen saver, or blank screen after a certain amount of time. No hibernation, no nothing. Have your computer run normally when running, but not in use. If you're snagging a torrent or something, and it hibernates.. things go haywire for some reason. This happens on Linux too, so I just stay away from screen savers and hibernation and whatever else. Set your performance settings to high and keep the computer running normal at all times. That's how I got over this problem anyways.

Definitely a possibility. I've never needed anything more than stock
onboard cards, so haven't run into or troubleshooted a related problem
like this, so I have no idea what's normal, but some googling should
tell you what temp range that card's processor can handle.

Try what Internetking suggested (more airflow) to cool the processor
down, and if that works, look into getting a faster fan. Also, sometimes
it's the case that's the problem. Is it too near another source of
heat, such as the power supply?

In the case that it's not a heat issue, has anything else changed that
might seem to not be related, such as a new location for the system,
or something else new within ten or fifteen feet? Have you recently
started charging your cell phone near the system? These can also be
things that might affect a computer. I've personally in the last fifteen
years never experienced anything environmental related, but I've heard
stories of things like TV's, elevators, air conditioners -- anything
that may potentially transmit radio noise causing intermittant computer problems.

If it's not heat or environmental, and since it's likely not the driver,
and you've already troubleshooted the OS, then I would troubleshoot the
power supply. At this point, it's grasping at straws, as I would expect
other symptoms to arise from a faulty supply, but you never know. Better
to check just in case, because if you can't figure it out from the above,
you may have to swap the card out.

I've never heard of that with a computer.. Maybe for a liquid-cooled PC setup, but I don't have one of those.

It still does this from time to time though. Now that you mention torrents, the last time this happened, I was downloading a torrent.. I wonder if that has anything to do with it, but I'd have to wonder why torrents would cause this issue.

I've never had an issue on Linux yet, but I remember having problems with running uTorrent for a couple days and using the screen blanking screen saver after like 20 minutes, and turning the monitor off when I wasn't there. Come home from work and the damn computer must've bluescreened and rebooted on me. Not sure what it could be though. A few times of that happening and I wiped Win7 and went with Debian. :)
