Does anyone have an idea about what might cause this?
Most likely a video driver issue. Have you tried reinstalling the driver?
Hi all -
There's an annoying issue with my PC that I've noticed since I bought it abo 2 years ago - Sometimes I'll leave it on for a while (while it's downloading something or performing some other long task) and turn the monitor off if I' not around, and after doing this, sometimes when I come back after some hour and turn the monitor back on, the monitor doesn't see a signal from the PC, even after I move the mouse or press a key on the keyboard (in case the scre saver was activated). If I reset the PC, the picture shows up on the screen normal. This has happened with 2 different monitors now (I upgraded the monitor recently). Since the picture comes back after I reboot the PC, it suggests to me that it's caused by an OS/software issue. I thought Windows might be set to turn off the monitor after some time, but I checked Windows' power settings, and I have it set to not turn the monitor off. I'm not sure yet what would cause this, and I don't like having to hard-reset my PC to ge the picture back. And, it only happens sometimes.. I've left this PC on wi the monitor off for hours at a time many times, and most of the time, the vi signal is fine after I come back and turn the monitor back on.
These are the PC's specs:
- CPU: AMD Phenom x4
- Motherboard: MSI MS-7548
- RAM: 8GB
- Video card: Nvidia GeForce 9500GGS w/ 512MB (PCI Express x16)

I've wondered if that might cause it. I installed an app not too long ago t shows you system temperatures, and it said the video card was a little hot.

Coolant? My PC is air-cooled, not water-cooled.. ;)

Do you think it could be caused by the video card overheating? A
little while ago I installed a program (SpeedFan) that tells you the temperatures of various chips and speeds of various fans in your
system, and it said my video card was a bit hot. I was a little concerned, but my PC is fairly free of dust inside, and the video card
fan still works..

mine is not water one but a chemical inside that keep it cool ... just like common coolers in cars, etc

I've had that happen before. As long as you turn your monitor off when you're not using your computer (I always do).. turn off all your power management stuff. No screen saver, or blank screen after a certain amount
of time. No hibernation, no nothing. Have your computer run normally when running, but not in use. If you're snagging a torrent or something, and it hibernates.. things go haywire for some reason.
I'd turn off any screensavers. If that doesn't help, change the power management settings to not power off the monitor or let the machine go to sleep.
I've had a lot of problems with OSes below Windows 7 and sleep/standby
mode.
I don't have any screen saver set up, and my power settings are set to not turn off the monitor, and I don't have it set up to automatically hibernate. It still does this from time to time though. Now that you mention torrents, the last time this happened, I was downloading a torrent.. I wonder if that has anything to do with it, but I'd have to wonder why torrents would cause this issue.

I've never had an issue on Linux yet, but I remember having problems with running uTorrent for a couple days and using the screen blanking screen save after like 20 minutes, and turning the monitor off when I wasn't there. Come home from work and the damn computer must've bluescreened and rebooted on me Not sure what it could be though. A few times of that happening and I wiped Win7 and went with Debian. :)
