Today, I saw someone's laptop whose Skype (v5.3) started crashing when going into the video settings, and her webcam wasn't working with Skype anymore. She said she did some Skype update earlier today and it wasn't working since then. I tried rolling back the Skype to an earlier version (5.2), but that didn't help; also found some webcam drivers online and installed them, but that didn't help. Has anyone had this issue with Skype recently?
I've seen some posts online about Skype crashing on Win7 x64, but I doubt that's it, since her edition of Windows 7 is 32-bit.

According to the skype.com website 5.3 is the latest version. I can't imagi why you have version 4.2. I've never used Skype either.

Looks like 4.2 is only a year old. Having gone from 4.2 to 5.3 in less than a year is pretty impressive (as in number of bugfix releases) for just an app.
According to OldApps 4.2.0.187 was the latest 4.2 release, 8 months
ago. Since then, about a month later, they released 5.0, and have had
six releases since. Wow.

I think major updates should be sent by monthly, giving more time to correct their bugs/fixes so they don't need to update as often. :)

ok

it was built it (in looking at it, it started to install, but I put a
end to that), most of the dir. have around a dec. 2010 date (this is
h-p laptop - hp 624)
HP is my brand of choice. That is really odd about 4.2 on your new system. From what I looked at on cnet.com, 4.2 was dated way back on February 25, 2010. HP really got behind on that one.

My point is simply before releasing a major new version, they should thoroughly test the product and not saddle consumers with bugs. They shouldn't have to release minor updates every month starting after releasing 5.0.

I was able to fix the issue by reverting to version 5.1 of Skype.
Version 5.2 wasn't working either.. Apparently, a lot of people are having problems with Skype 5.3 crashing, but for many people, it
crashes on startup on 64-bit versions of Windows.

I agree, that is odd. They usually aren't up to date anyway, but that
is old. When I buy a piece of hardware, I usually don't even use the drivers on the included disc anymore - I tend to go to the
manufacturer's web site for drivers, since there are almost always
newer drivers available than what they put on the discs shipped with
the hardware.
I think HP makes good laptops too. My current laptop is a Sony though, and I think it's pretty good. The one thing that bugs me about it, though, is that it only has 2 USB ports.. My previous laptop (an HP)
had 4, and I thought that was nice. When practically everything is available in a USB version these days, USB ports are typically the only kind of ports laptops have anymore, so to only have 2 ports is a little annoying.

Nah, the latest release is Sept 7th, and the earliest 5.0 is Oct 14th. They probably just pulled it in between, and being a bundled 'ware,
might only revisit it once a year.
I guess the reason I like HP as well as I do is because of how long they products last and they are usually inexpensive to buy.
had a Sony Vaio I absolutely loved. Regretfully, lightning struck the electric pole outside, sent a charge to the electric meter, tore it completely off the house - resulting, it fried my Sony.

Is Skype free? If it is, the reason for minor updates is because the public the beta testers. They report the bugs, and the bugs get fixed as needed. That's why the versioning doesn't go from 5.0 straight to 6.0. That would be major upgrade.

HP seems to make generally good stuff, and the last time I bought a desktop PC, I bought an HP. That was the first time I had bought a mass-produced PC rather than building my own. Usually I don't like
buying mass-produced PCs from the major brands because they seem to
skimp on some parts and use custom PC cases, which bugs me. And this
PC was another example of why I tend to avoid these - The video card
fan started to get really noisy after only 2 months of use. Turns out
it was a common problem, and they replaced it for free though, so it turned out okay. But recently, I installed a temperature monitoring program, and it says the video card is quite warm... Makes me nervous.
Next time I upgrade my PC, I think I'd like to build my own again.

That sucks. :(
You should hear thunder that close. I thought my house was going to be on fire. <g>
I know with every HP, their on-board video chipset has been massively outdated. Usually when I buy their PC, I immediately run out and buy a new
video card. Another thing is their power supplies have only been 300W so
it limits me to what kind of video card I buy. I know I can upgrade the power supply, but then by the time I upgrade all the parts I could have
just built my own. I bought a HP Slimline here recently and the thing I don't like about it is that it only had one empty expansion slot. The new PC has been fairly nice to me though.

We had a CompUSA here many years ago, but they went out of business.
I loved that store.
I had an interview there at one time too shortly before the closed. <g>

There used to be a couple in the Portland area that I knew of (one in Beaverton and another in Jantzen Beach),
but as far as I know, they all
closed down a couple years ago when CompUSA went out of business.
I agree, they were fun stores to look around in. I enjoyed them.
