• Skype 5.3 crashing in video settings

From Nightfox to All on Sat May 21 20:09:55 2011
    Hi all -

Today, I saw someone's laptop whose Skype (v5.3) started crashing when going into the video settings, and her webcam wasn't working with Skype anymore. She said she did some Skype update earlier today and it wasn't working since then. I tried rolling back the Skype to an earlier version (5.2), but that didn't help; also found some webcam drivers online and installed them, but that didn't help. Has anyone had this issue with Skype recently?

I've seen some posts online about Skype crashing on Win7 x64, but I doubt that's it, since her edition of Windows 7 is 32-bit.

Looks like 4.2 is only a year old. Having gone from 4.2 to 5.3 in less than a year is pretty impressive (as in number of bugfix releases) for just an app.

According to OldApps 4.2.0.187 was the latest 4.2 release, 8 months ago. Since then, about a month later, they released 5.0, and have had six releases since. Wow.

Today, I saw someone's laptop whose Skype (v5.3) started crashing when going into the video settings, and her webcam wasn't working with Skype anymore.

I was able to fix the issue by reverting to version 5.1 of Skype. Version 5.2 wasn't working either.. Apparently, a lot of people are having problems with Skype 5.3 crashing, but for many people, it crashes on startup on 64-bit versions of Windows.

My point is simply before releasing a major new version, they should thoroughly test the product and not saddle consumers with bugs. They shouldn't have to release minor updates every month starting after releasing 5.0.

I agree, that is odd. They usually aren't up to date anyway, but that is old. When I buy a piece of hardware, I usually don't even use the drivers on the included disc anymore - I tend to go to the manufacturer's web site for drivers, since there are almost always newer drivers available than what they put on the discs shipped with the hardware.

I think HP makes good laptops too. My current laptop is a Sony though, and I think it's pretty good. The one thing that bugs me about it, though, is that it only has 2 USB ports.. My previous laptop (an HP) had 4, and I thought
that was nice. When practically everything is available in a USB version
these days, USB ports are typically the only kind of ports laptops have anymore, so to only have 2 ports is a little annoying.

Yeah, I agree. Version 1 should be very stable and new whole number versions become available should be complete makeovers from the last version and not just fixes or patches. 5.0 should be solid.

Nah, the latest release is Sept 7th, and the earliest 5.0 is Oct 14th.
They probably just pulled it in between, and being a bundled 'ware, might only revisit it once a year.

Yes, that is good advice for anyone buying new hardware. Just go to their direct site and download all the available drivers for each piece or however many devices you're setting up.

I guess the reason I like HP as well as I do is because of how long they products last and they are usually inexpensive to buy.

I think HP makes good laptops too. My current laptop is a Sony though, and I think it's pretty good. The one thing that bugs me about it, though, is that it only has 2 USB ports.. My previous laptop (an HP)

I have a neat little HP netbook I got from school awhile back. It only came with 2 USB ports too. I suppose you could buy a USB hub to support more
than 2 ports. I've seen as many as 24 for single port. I like Sony too. I had a Sony Vaio I absolutely loved. Regretfully, lightning struck the

I guess the reason I like HP as well as I do is because of how long they products last and they are usually inexpensive to buy.

HP seems to make generally good stuff, and the last time I bought a desktop PC, I bought an HP. That was the first time I had bought a mass-produced PC rather than building my own. Usually I don't like buying mass-produced PCs from the major brands because they seem to skimp on some parts and use custom PC cases, which bugs me. And this PC was another example of why I tend to avoid these - The video card fan started to get really noisy after only 2 months of use. Turns out it was a common problem, and they replaced it for free though, so it turned out okay. But recently, I installed a temperature monitoring program, and it says the video card is quite warm... Makes me nervous. Next time I upgrade my PC, I think I'd like to build my own again.

My point is simply before releasing a major new version, they should thoroug test the product and not saddle consumers with bugs. They shouldn't have to release minor updates every month starting after releasing 5.0.

Is Skype free? If it is, the reason for minor updates is because the public ARE the beta testers. They report the bugs, and the bugs get fixed as needed. That's why the versioning doesn't go from 5.0 straight to 6.0. That would be a major upgrade.

    Examples:

Windows -- Major version release with few Service Pack updates.. You have to pay for Windows.

Just about anything Linux: Free. Versioning looks more like 5.0.1.0, etc. The people using it are the ones testing it.

Once you start paying for Skype you will probably start seeing it change over to major updates. As they have to give you a quality product for what you're paying for it.

Skype is sort-of-free. Their website offers a business solution, but I have no idea if it's an older packaged version. Being that they market heavily to business, I'd assume they wouldn't want to saddle users with beta-class software.

The same is true with Linux. Most distributions have cutting-edge releases, and stable releases. Most users don't actually use the cutting-edge beta releases; the only reason there are so many updates is because almost ALL of the software, right down to browser updates, are piped through the same distribution channel.

That's funny... I love weather (and especially storms), and my daughter was even born during a fantastic lightning storm. So, I always try to get my kids interested in weather.

One night, the kids had just fallen asleep when a really badass storm rolls in. I wake her up to spend some special father daughter time together, just the two of us, on the balcony. She's scared at first, then starts to kinda get into the groove of what I was trying to show her...the beauty of it... the wind in her hair, the sound of furious showers, the rolling thunder, the bright flashbang as a bolt strikes in the backyard (!)

I immediately grab her by reflex it seems before the sound is even over and haul her through the door. Two seconds later she finally starts balling...lol... I couldn't believe my luck that a bolt would decide to strike that close when I'm trying to pass on my love of storms. On top of that, within five minutes we had two more strike in the neighborhood. She hasn't like lightning since... ;)

From what I looked at on cnet.com, 4.2 was dated way back on February 25, 2010. HP really got behind on that one.

    yep, got it from compusa

We had a CompUSA here many years ago, but they went out of business.

    ohhh nooooooooo

    I loved that store.

there one in portland, org. (not sure if it still there) fun store to look around in

I had an interview there at one time too shortly before the closed. <g>

    ohh nooooooooooo

:) We had a CompUSA here too, but they closed just a couple years ago when they went out of business. I was disappointed, because I really liked that store. :( I applied for a job there once a long time ago, but they never contacted me for an interview. I had called them about it, and they said the manager was on vacation at the time..

There used to be a couple in the Portland area that I knew of (one in Beaverton and another in Jantzen Beach), but as far as I know, they all closed down a couple years ago when CompUSA went out of business.

I agree, they were fun stores to look around in. I enjoyed them.

yep, got two h-d from them, the first one a 8 gig (new) it was a bit before win. 98 came out, a few year ago, it died (it was a bbs h-d, then it went to other things) the sec. one (new), forgot what size it was, I just got it formated and the last win. 98 put in (this was before the win. 98 had it last update) and it died, wasn't very happy, had to call the maker to get a new one and then send the bad one back, that one, I still have offhand don't know where
it at or what it job it, it was a bbs h-d at one time
