• Apple OS X Lion

I saw that Apple has released OS X Lion, the new version of their OS. They
say it's only available as a web download though, and you need to have Snow Leopard installed in order to install Lion..?? I am a little confused - It sounds like there is no way to do a stand-alone fresh install of Lion, and
they aren't selling install DVDs with Lion. Does anyone have more info about this?

What if you are running OS X Tiger and want to upgrade to Lion? Do you have
to buy Snow Leopard, install that, and then download & install Lion?

This doesn't make much sense, and I imagine it would irritate a lot of Mac users. Requiring a previous version of the OS in order to install the new one also seems Microsoft-ish to me.. I never expected to see that from Apple.

There is a way to make a bootable DVD if you want to do a fresh install floating around the internet.. I think Apple came in later in the day and agreed it was possible. If you want to upgrade though from prior to Snow Leopard, then you first have to upgrade to Snow Leopard and then make the hop to Lion.. :-(

Here's the link to make your bootable Lion disk:

We tried this yesterday on an older model Mac Mini at work and it functioned as published..

I'm baffled about why Apple would do this. I thought Apple was always all for making things easy and simple, so this move is fairly strange.

True, and they're no different than Microsoft that way - But I've always heard that Apple strongly believes in ease of use and simplicity in their products, and I think they follow that belief fairly well to an extent. And, one of the things that Apple fans have said is an advantage of the Mac platform is that there's only one edition of OS X (unlike 3-4 for Windows, each available in 32-bit and 64-bit flavors too), and that OS X doesn't require activation or a previous version in order to install. So I'm a bit surprised to see Apple release a version of OS X that requires a previous version in order to
    install.

If a customer buys a brand-new Mac, though, I'd have to imagine that it would come with a set of OS X Lion install discs.. Or maybe they'll get Lion set up on the machine and ship Snow Leopard *and* Lion with the machine? If the latter is the case, that would seem strange to me.

It's really irritating.. when you download the update, you can burn the .dmg file to a cd or USB key iirc. I haven't done it, as I don't have, or want to tie a credit card into apple's system. (too easy to buy crap), I don't think you can upgrade from tiger to lion, but if you want a fresh install, just snag a copy from a friend (after you've paid your $30 dues of course, not suggesting you go to torrentz.eu and download the dmg or anything like that)

Apple owners are stylish, and high tech. They all have high speed internet connections, and of course the download should be easiest. Or just go into the Apple store and have an iGenius do it for you.
