• Can't remove Android Facebook app

From Nightfox to All on Sat Jul 14 09:31:36 2012
I have an LG Optimus Slider phone (running Android 2,3.4), and some time ago I installed the Facebook app on it. Recently I wanted to uninstall it to free up some space, but I found that it would only let me uninstall the updates to Facebook, but not the Facebook app itself. Has anyone had this problem and know of a way to uninstall the Facebook app?

    Ahoy Nightfox,

installed the Facebook app on it. Recently I wanted to uninstall it to free some space, but I found that it would only let me uninstall the updates to Facebook, but not the Facebook app itself. Has anyone had this problem and know of a way to uninstall the Facebook app?

Yes, this is "normal". Your ROM came with Facebook version x.y.z. All updates after that, you can uninstall the normal way. Facebook x.y.z., you "can't" uninstall--that is to say, the manufacturers didn't intend for you to uninstall it.

You of course, can remove the .APK manually if you have rooted your device.

    Hope that helps,

that fb is on there due to an agreement between your carrier, google and fb.

you have to have root to either freeze it or remove it.
i would rather freeze it instead. you can also freeze or remove any crappy default apps that you would rather not use to free up your memory.

    remember to backup first.

did it take the permissions of the default facebook app? which is locked. unless you are rooted. then just get appmanager.

I'm not sure what you mean.. But anyway, Facebook wasn't included with my phone when I bought it - I installed it after I bought it, so I'd think I should be able to uninstall it like any other app that I've installed.

It's running Android 2.3.4. It's an LG Optimus Slider through Virgin Mobile. I'm fairly certain the Facebook app wasn't there. yeah it has to be rooted. rooting your phone isnt such a big deal. it just gives you the access that you should have to your phone. there are several benefits as well.

i know a phone hacker [i hate to use that word now] and he's on my irc network.

his name is mikeredd and he'd be glad to answer any questions you have. he has owned several phones , sometimes 2 or 3 a year and he has rooted and bricked and restored them all. :D he works a lot and he's on the west coast so he's on evenings and during the day when he's at work.

My phone isn't rooted.. I've tried doing some things with it that I wasn't able to do (i.e., changing the startup sound) that I found out required rooting. Why would a phone company root their phones though? I'd think it would be in their best interest not to root their phones, so that they'd have more control over what their phones do, and to prevent customers from doing stupid things and then clogging up tech support lines or returning the phones to the store.

    Ahoy NF,

No, my ROM didn't come with it. I downloaded and installed Facebook myself from the Android store some time ago, after I bought the phone.
I have a ROM here, that does have FB installed. When I go into Play, it doesn't recognize that FB has been installed, and lets me download it just the same, as if it weren't installed. To date nothing bad has happened, but I've seen this behavior here if it helps.

Regardless of when it was installed, it does seem that you will need root to remove it. It's actually fairly easy to do--you don't need to call in the "haxors". I've done it on a handful of android devices over the years without issue--read a few separate posts/pages that describe the process (not just one), and I think you should be fine.

    Kind regards,

Well I remember installing the Facebook app after I bought my phone.. I don't remember it being there when I bought it.
Just a FYI to whoever posted it originally... I installed Facebook on my
Motorolla Back Flip. I once had to uninstall it and re-install it. To get
it removed totally, I had to download an app that was designed for removing
hard to remove apps. You could try going to settings, running programs,
then killing anything related to facebook, then go to settings, applications
and try removing it there, but I remember facebook, one of my task killers,
and a few other apps you had to download a special program that whipes it off
your phone... And even then, there was like 2-3 programs that claimed to do it, and only one actually seemed to work...

I don't have the problem, but just to add to the conversation. I have a Samsung Nexus S 4G on Sprint (The 4G network is nonexistent) running
Android ICS 4.0.4. Its a very flexible and friendly device. I can

The facebook app does hog more and more resources without any added functionality. Its cutting into my Temple Run resource needs. At least
I can play Grabatron without any problems.

Sorry Nightfox. I don't understand why you would be unable to uninstall facebook. Have you tried stopping the processes first and then
    uninstalling?

thats what I was thinking. the android os usally dont lock a app unless the carrier tells them too. it is very rare a unbundled app would toggle app lock on it's own. but a update is varied. some let you remove a update, but not the original app. and some will lock the update too.
If he roots he must becareful. some program will uninstall a app and not tell you want the dependencysare, untill you os crashes on you.

    your phone came with it.
    you downloaded an update.

No, I haven't downloaded an update for my phone, since there have been no overall system updates for it. It has had Android 2.3.4 since I bought it. Besides, how do you know what all I've done with my phone? :P

hmm, one way to find out thou.
make a FULL backup of all youur added stuff.
then do a factory reinit of the phone.
and see if it is still there. since you didnt root, it would not be in the factory rom image.

not the original app. and some will lock the update too.
If he roots he must becareful. some program will uninstall a app and not tell you want the dependencysare, untill you os crashes on you.

yeah, that's why a lot of root admin tools have the 'freeze' feature.

i didnt say you downloaded an update for your phone's os. your phone
updated the app that was already installed.

if you want to clear up this confusion call up VM and ask them if fb app is already installed. it is.

Yeah, and I know there have been some updates to the app. But what I've been saying all this time is that I'm fairly sure that the app didn't come with my phone - I remember downloading it at one point.

How are you so sure it came with my phone? On the link to my phone's specs I shared earlier, I didn't see Facebook included in the list of apps.

because i know it comes with either a facebook app or a type of stub app.

just revert your phone. export your contacts and do a reset.

it doesnt say it in my phone specs either.
