• External Modem + Virtual

So I'm running Win XPMode on top of Win7/64, and it runs great for
    >everything...

Etc.. etc.. I read later that you found the solution to the problem
you were asking about but, since you have stirred up some questions
about Virtual PC's I wonder if you or anyone would know.. I play old
Dos based Doom II over modems with a friend. I recently upgraded to
a new monster system running Win7 64 Pro and I'd prefer not to have to
keep an old machine running as well just to play the games.

I messed around a bit with DosBox and can get it to play the game
on my machine but not to pass on modem commands. The file used to
start the game will first dial out and then tell the game what level
and such to use. I could get DosBox to actually dial but I think it
stops there. Even through Windows 98 you have to 'fool' the modem
into using virtual ports because the Windows modem port settings
can't be seen by DOS so there's that second 'virtual' layer in there.

Would some type of VM ware be likely to work better at something like
this than DosBox? It's been suggested if I could find a simple DOS
dialer and hook up through DosBox and then start the game telling it
I am already connected that this might work but I haven't run across
a simple dialer that will let you include port speeds and init string
    to use and such yet.

Oh.. This is with an internal PCI hardware Winmodem.

buy a USR pci modem and run it with a dos driver.

If that was your first line I would of stopped reading. I read nothing but
"I can't get my PC Winmodem to work in <Virtual Software Name>." when I was messing with my setup. I could be wrong.

In DOSBox however in your .conf file there's a Serial section and I think if you set the serial1 line to:

    serial1=directserial realport:comX

...where X is the port# of your WinModem then in DOS Box COM1 should be able
to talk to your modem, but again I've heard Winmodems do not like virtualization software.

Thanks for the suggestion but I've been through multiple trials with those lines. As I said earlier I can get it to dial out so DosBox is finding the modem okay but the infighting between the real Com port and the Virtual
com port is stopping it from working within the game.

A simple Dos Dialer that accepts modem strings run from within Dosbox
could maybe be used to connect first and then you'd start the game as
'Already Connected' but I haven't found anything like that yet..

Old message, but what the hell, maybe you're still looking for a suggestion.

Does DOSBox have an option to move com port data via telnet? I use an emulator called Altirra which emulates Atari 8-bit computers (probably the best emulator ever, imho) and what it does is if you load a terminal application you can type in modem commands like:

    atdi shodan.synchro.net 23

And the emulator will catch that as, I want to telnet to shodan.synchro.net:23, and if I connect I will relay the data via telnet and pretend it's being sent to a modem in the emulator. If the connection is rejected then the emulator reports "NO CARRIER" like a modem.

Works quite nicely, I've dailed out to a bunch of Internet BBSs with it, but I don't know if DOSBox does something like that.

Your other option would be to run one of the NEW versions of DOOM that's compatible with Windows and TCP/IP, etc. Doom source is out there now, lots of optional engines to run the game on.

    >don't know if DOSBox does something like that.

If I follow I'm not sure that would help. What I've done for years is used
a Win98 machine to play the game. I can load a Virtual Modem driver into
it to fool the game into thinking the modem is at a DOS address such as
COM2 IRQ3 instead of the oddball IRQ numbers (like 10 or 11) that PCI Modems use these days.
After that it works fine because through Win 98 all commands after that
point might as well be directly through DOS. If I go to a newer version
of Windows I start off with the same IRQ issue, but anything that happens
after that the OS doesn't like. The program to start it hooks up and then
sends parameters for what map and skill level and such are needed.
In Dosbox I can get as far as to have it dial out and hook up but then
it pretty much stops. It's been suggested that maybe hooking up first
through a simple dialer from within Dosbox and then telling the game that
you are already connected might get around that but I haven't had much
luck finding a simple DOS based dialer so far.

Your other option would be to run one of the NEW versions of DOOM that's
    >compatible with Windows and TCP/IP, etc. Doom source is out there now,

I have 4 or 5 of those now.. the only problem is they are all designed
around either playing alone or tricking a modem based program into using
an Internet connection instead of dialing modem to modem. If I had near unlimited high speed that might be an option but that's not available at anything reasonable here.. I'd be looking at $90 or so a month.

I appreciate the suggestions though.. B)
