• Dialup over VOIP

From Carnsteve@VERT/STARR to All on Fri Dec 27 13:32:23 2013
    Hi ALL,

ok this may get a bit confusing but...

Ive wanted to setup a BBS here in Ireland for a while but ive found a better use for it than just a telnet bbs.

I live in quite a rural area and some users are still only able to use dialup.

That got me thinking The BBS could also have a dial in element to it.

I was wondering if I can do the Dial in via VOIP.
I have a couple of PAP2 box's and wanted to use these to create a multi port node.

Are you able to do Dialup via VOIP has anyone done this ??

    Your thoughts

I believe that this will be determined by your ISP that is providing
the VOIP. I have Charter Communications VOIP, in Missouri USA, and I can dial from a modem and connect with no issues. However, the way that the ISP
handles and transmits packets may be a little different.

I would call them and ask them if they support modem dialing over their VOIP.

    Hi there,

Ill give it a go ...

I had just setup a quick VOIP system in the house and was testing it out as im trying to setup a BBS for here in Ireland as there seems to be none?!

Its working ok and I have managed to squeeze about 14.4k out of the system.

VOIP is not realy designed for data but it will work to some degree thank god.

    Happy new years

I am happy to hear that you at least are getting something out of the VOIP connection. Most VOIP connections only allow the transfer of data packets. However, there are devices, that are implemented within the network, that can translate modem dial tones into data packets. But, some of this equipment
    is kind of expensive.

On another note, is a dial up line expensive in Ireland? I remember you
saying that you were going to keep the bbs more local, due to the fact that most people are still using dialup or are you attempting to run a Telnet/Dial up BBS from the same VOIP connection?

Anyways, I hope you get everything working great and it will be very interesting to hear about the progress.

Take care and have a Happy New Year
