Does anyone know of an iOS app that supports ANSI BBS terminal emulation? I have a former BBS caller who no longer uses anything but the iTHINGS. I never did find an Android app that was satisfactory either.

Seems like something for an enterprising BBS software author to work on, would be even better if it came with an offline mail reader (QWK/QWKE as a minimum, Bluewave and other formats if time permits). I'd be in mobile BBS heaven if such an app came along! :) Currently, I use NewsTam for reading echomail while mobile, but that leaves netmail out in the cold, I have to telnet in (using POP email from multiple locations is fraught with danger ;) ).

That's another thing I haven't seen in a BBS package - support for IMAP access for email.

There used to be iSSH, but I heard that was pulled from the Apple app store..

Synchronet does IMAP, mostly. Last time I checked, folder support was funky, but it worked. The only reason I turned if off was because my BBS box is too slow and I wanted to trim running services.

Hmm, OK, I must have missed that part in the docs. I'll have to have a look. I can live without folders, I don't get enough netmails to have to sort them, as my main email addresses are not on the BBS. :)

I have iSSH. Nice terminal, but not really designed for BBSs. I use it for emergency remote administration. When combined with the native VPN capabilities of iOS, I can access any server on the LAN. Last time I used it was a month ago, diagnosing a BBS failure while on a bus. The failure turned out to be some hardware oddities, so I couldn't resolve it until I got home. :(

The last time I used it (maybe around 2009 or so), iSSH seemed to have decent ANSI BBS emulation, even including support for the high-ASCII characters. It seemed to work fairly well. What issues did you have with it when using BBSes?

I don't recall now if I could create mail folders, but it also references all of your messages echoes as IMAP folders.

To be honest, I haven't tried it, because my main issue is self evident - I read my mail offline. :)

Interesting. :) Pity I haven't found an offline email MUA that I like for the iPad. I have tried a few, but each one has had issues, and reading online is too slow on mobile networks, all that waiting for data transfer (one of the reasons I hate web forums).

Could always create a limited vm with a terminal installed on it. So the
only thing a visitor could do it to use the terminal application through
Vnc. If it get hacked the only thing compromised it that vm with the
    terminal not the bbs itself.

Terminals work for text but on my BBS (what's left of it), it's all about Scrabble so we need ansi cursor controls.
