    Greetings,

Does anyone know how the registration information was ever entered into Telix 3.51 for DOS back in the day?

Telemate had a switch - TM /R at startup whcih allowed you to insert the serial details and brand Telemate. But I cannot find anything like that in Telix.

Telix does have the auto register, but all this does is ask for credit card details and does not accept a serial number.

    Anyone?

    Jeff.

I don't know if you found your answer for this yet, but it was a program caled BRANDTLX.EXE or BRAND.EXE in the same directory as Telex. Just exicute this program, and enter the info it asks and your copy will be registered.

Does anyone have a copy of this program? I have 3.22 but not 3.51.

I've got a copy of terminate as well, its very similar to telix.

I have tons of shareware CDS online (lots of NightOwls) but I don't belive my file search works correctly because I have a lot of telix stuff on those disks and have seen a lot of telix upgrades, etc but go to do a full file directory search of telix and it shows nothing, think I will need to do a little more testing then ask around about this, I may or may not have it if you wanna try to take a look.

I did a quick google search for Telix 3.51 and found answers to a lot of what you are asking about.

Ugh. Not that screen... The shareware nag screen that tries to explain what shareware is and tells you to press any key when you understand what shareware means.

When I'm not using ConnectBot on my Android devices, and actually on my PC, I prefere the mTCP Telnet on FreeDOS (with Virtualbox) or Synchterm. Yay for open source!

ha haa! I know its the worst. telemate and telix love that trick. telemate is a bit worse.

I found telemate 4.21 which is OK but it doesn't have scipting via menu items. I found telix 3.51 shareware and that is a nice upgrade compared with the 3.22 I've been using since it came out.
I haven't fixed the shareware nag but I just started checking it out.
Telix 3.51 has the scripting via the menu and its nice to see a top menu now. Termiate 5.00 and Telemate seem a similar but so does telix, but terminate doesn't have the top menu. I think terminate has the limits on with the non-registered version. .. if I had more time I would crack it.

I really liked procom plus long ago and I used it up util 2006.

The features of termiate are pretty good and it has an offline mail reader. I just can't get the registration completed.
I may have an old procom in a box on a 1.44 floppy but I haven't felt like getting into the 100s of floppys I have with who knows what on them. Some are archived with different versions of msbackup so its a bit of a pain.

I have an interesting problem with all the dos terminal programs runing through dosbox, they each have problems transferring data via zmodem or any of the normal protocols.

I'm pretty sure its a dosbox issue but I can't tell for sure. I used to have more issues compared with what bbs I was contacting but now it seems all syncronet bbs systems have the issue and wwiv systems.

I would stay with syncterm but runing it via linux ansi isn't coming over so good. Dosbox via one of the terminal programs works best.

Have you used dosbox and if so what do you think vs FreeDOS?
    I've never used FreeDOS before.

I still use DOSBox, actually. FreeDOS and DOSBox have different purposes. DOSBox is an emulator of DOS, and a really good one. FreeDOS is an actual operating system. I ran FreeDOS in a VM and it works, but I struggled on getting games to run as well as DOSBox. However, I was able to get mTCP and Telnet to work, along with Open Cubic Player and FreeBASIC.

I don't have the hardware nor a copy of MS-DOS to really do a comparison; however, from what I remember using when I was a kid and later on when I rebuilt a 486 machine in college, I feel FreeDOS 1.2 (released a couple of weeks ago) is pretty close to MS-DOS 6.22. FreeDOS 1.2 has more applocations included (and even games), so I think it is worth take a look at FreeDOS in a VM, even on actual hardward.

As far as BBSing, FreeDOS in a VM does well, but I cannot do full screen like
I could with SyncTERM. DOSBox, I'm struggling to get TCP/IP to work now, but you can emulate a modem and it works.

I just received donations of 2 not-so-old laptops (2005-07 era) and they run FreeDOS like a dream. I was able to get nettworking going, but failed with sound. With the proof-of-concept that it will run on them, I've temporarily moved development to KVM and hope to get a virtual BBS running on them in DOS. They have modems that still work!

It was really awesome seeing jayscafe in fullscreen glory. Made me want to get on the stick about displaying some ANSI art.

That is awesome! I have some interest in having older hardware around, but the very limited time and funds keep me from doing it. The thrift stores (namely Goodwill, hadn't been to the local ones) do not have older hardware around.

Just out of curiosity, what version of FreeDOS? 1.1 or 1.2? Sounds like, possibly, 1.2.

FreeDOS 1.2. I had to burn the legacy ISO to get it to install. I saw
the developer's spot on TWiT and had to try the new version. Now, I'm
having fun playing some 8-bit games that came with 1.2 and others that
I had lying around. I wish I would have left them alone. Those games
have a special place in my heart... as simple as they are, I enjoy them
more than the bulk of stuff that is produced today.

I haven't tried FreeDOS yet but for a VM platform Proxmox might work for the full screen. It will not work with the Sound.

I don't know what will result of the networking/modem emulation but I'm pretty sure you'll get a good FullScreen interface via a Web Browser.
