Maybe I am missing it here. It seems like, to me, you know what you want for sure. I am not see what the question is.

I apologize that I am not getting it; not sure what is being asked, specifically.

Is there a question in there? Do you need advice in the purchase?

Good computer and Cheep are mutually exclusive most of the time.

However, watch Office Depot/Max sales papers. Every once in a while they have what is called a "loss-leader." They sell it for a loss to get people in the store.

About 3 years ago, I picked up a i7 octo-core Toshiba laptop with 750 GB and 8 GB RAM for under $300. I had to sweet talk a manager into finding me one within 50 miles and then I had to drive to pick it up, but I still have that laptop and it is the most powerful system I've purchased.

I did the same thing with a 50" flatscreen ~$199.

    The process is:
    1) Read the sales papers every Sunday in the local newspaper.
    2) Identify a great deal.
    3) Call the stores and sweet talk a manager to find what store in the area has one.
    4) Call the store that has one and have them hold it for you, pay on the phone if you need to.

They only have to have one in the store to fulfill their legal obligation to place the add. You are competing with other people that do this, so don't get upset if they don't have any left in your area.

Another option is to cruise Dell Outlet. You can score some deals there too.

I think you'll better luck going to eBay or Apple's refurb website.

And if the CD-ROM is the deciding factor, do as I did, get an
external USB CD-ROM / DVD Rewriteable drive!

I love old Mac systems, but their new shit... is shit. I get that Apple wants you to buy a new Mac every 3-4 years, but seriously, sealing the systems making them impossible to service is just flat out retarded.

I get the Apple business model when it comes to Hardware profit, but they already have the [amazing] Apple App Store for software, why get all greedy when it comes to the hardware side of it? I mean, great for share holders, but fuck your customers silly and then don't even bother calling afterwards, AMIRITE?

You don't need optical drives anymore, everything is downloaded or sold on USB drives now. What are you using the system for? i7 is overkill for most apps, but I guess if price is no object, go for it.

You might keep in mind that AMD is poised to realse RYZOM (spelling?) in the NEAR future to compete with Intel's i5/i7. If those turn out to be amazing (and a lot of people think they will) it's going to drive down CPU prices real fast.

Good place to go for PC building advice is reddit.com/r/buildapc if you're looking to buy a system, I'd just go with a Dell. Again, depends on what you need.
