just wantin to ask if its a good idea to use a BBS via telnet on andorid 5.x i mean im useing it right now to post this msg but some of the text is garbled up and the phone donst know what to do with it

the SSH/Telner softwere im useing is called Terumis

There are few terminal/telnet clients on Android that emulate codepage and font correctly to use them for connecting to a BBS.

There is one, though not free, called ANSI Terminal Mobile by Horsequester, that works very well.

I was not able to locate Terumis, so I was not able to try it out.

Generally speaking, you will need a terminal emulator that does code page 437 or vt100 at the least, along with a good font, like a console font with support for extended ascii characters.

I have been using ConnectBot for both my phone and tablet. I still prefere to use SyncTerm for the PC because of the codepage support. ConnectBot is free (both libre and gratis), it works, but the ASCII art does not look as good as they do in SyncTerm.

My biggest complaint about using Telnet on the phone is the teeny-tiny text, cramped keyboard, and difficult it is to write messages. Thankfully, I am using the line editor that will allow me to use slash-commands to edit indiviual lines and save or abort the message. However, I hate having to retype the entire line just because one little mistake at the start of the line.

It is doable and it works, and great for being on the go; however, it is not the best experience.

you could use my.ftelnet.ca if you have a nice tablet.

bbsnexus had a nice app but it only called the bbses on the list and i dont think it works anymore.

you can use juicessh in a pinch. has display issues.

there are some decent chinese telnet clients that ALMOST get it right.
we do not have a perfect telnet app yet.
i had a ftelnet android app that worked kinda ok but i think rick stopped working on it due to issues with flash. it would crash but connected to the bbs fine.

That said, it doesn't seem to be further supported or updated by the author since 2014

It forces the screen into landscape mode with an on-screen keyboard that you cannot hide or disable. That makes for damn small font size to get 80x25 to fit in whats left of the screen. I have a Galaxy S4 phone, it is useable, but I wouldn't try reading and replying to messages.

It doesn't do well with the auto-detect color terminal setting in Synchronet, if auto-detect terminal is set in the users config on Synchronet then it will do black and white ansi upon connect until you change to color terminal in your account settings. I've not used it to connect to a non-Synchronet system, but suspect it would have the same issue with detecting color capabilities with other BBS software.

It renders ANSI extremely well, but doesn't auto-detect color. The locked on-screen keyboard sucks, as I like to use my Asus Slider, which is an Android tablet with a built-in keyboard. WTF do I need an onscreen keyboard that I can't get rid of when I have a mechanical keyboard right here..

Maybe the review will save you a buck.

Screw all the terms for android or any other mobile device anymore, if I'm out and about I just use my website for my bbs and ftelnet works great if I want to play games or something, If I want to do messages I use the message forums.

EC outdid himself on this one.
