It would be cool to have a small micro-computer that is operated like a Google Chromecast that had 128gb of storage where you could run a bbs from your television.

I imagine you'd need a bluetooth mouse & keyboard.. Why not just use a laptop or something?

I imagine you'd need a bluetooth mouse & keyboard.. Why not just use a laptopheat issues and also white noise issues.
or something?
i've used kodi and plex and i have an android tv, but it was such a pain in the ass with some things, i just bought a 200 dollar laptop from walmart and i plug it in via hdmi and i have no stuttering or share issues or codec probs like i had with my android box or using plex.

I've been using Plex and I've rarely had a problem with it. I think just once it said the TV couldn't display the file format, but it said I could enable transcoding on the Plex server to get around that. On one TV, Plex has had problems displaying photos, but on our other TV it works fine.. Overall though I've mainly used Plex for movies & TV shows and haven't had much of an issue with it.

white noise issue? wtf
plex has a lot of problems, kodi is better.
right now i'm using a laptop with hdmi input to the tv so got no problems at all and i prefer it.
the same time with no issues, my router has tri band.
I run plex on an acer N281G thin client eith 4GB mem and 1.8Mhz atom cpu. been running almost non stop for 2 years.
Plex has worked fairly well for me for the most part.. I can plug in a laptop, but I'd rather not get the laptop out whenver I want to watch something on the TV. Plex works well enough for me that it's easier to just use Plex.

I rip my movies to 720 no high def that takes up to much HD space.

IMO, SD stuff still looks okay on a HD TV. I imagine the upscaling algorithms do some things to try to make the image look better. You
can tell it's SD vs. HD, but I've played some SD shows with Plex that
were ripped from DVDs that look decent on a HD TV.

yes I rip to either MKV or h.264

I don't view anything on the computer besides windows and the plex browser, I use Roku plex app on my roku tv.
the plex app does h.264 but not h.265,

My guess was that the OP was referring to fan noise.
