• New PC: Weird VNC client issue

From Nightfox to All on Sun Jun 23 21:14:19 2019
I built a new desktop PC recently and have been installing and setting up all my software. I normally use VNC to remote desktop to my BBS machine and my Linux machine (running Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.1) - and my BBS is running in Windows 7 32-bit in a VirtualBox machine on my Linux machine. I installed TightVNC on my new desktop, and I can VNC to my Windows BBS VM, but when I try to VNC to my Linux machine, it doesn't connect, but it doesn't report any errors either. After I click the Connect button, the TightVNC server input window disappears and then nothing happens at all. I'm not sure what's going on, since it doesn't report an error. I can VNC to my BBS Windows VM just fine though.. Has anyone seen that happen with VNC before?

Never had that problem and I've used Tight and RealVNC a lot. You could try the free version of TeamViewer which has linux and windows builds. You can't blank the host screen with the free version, but it works great in a pinch.

I'm currently using it on windows, linux, and mac machines at home and work.

    Thanks,

I've used TeamViewer, and I suppose that could work. I know there are other options out there too.. It's possible to set up the Microsoft Remote Desktop Protocol to work in Linux too. I was just curious about the VNC thing since I hadn't changed anything on my server at all..

i used teamviewer for a few years. the problem is their support sucks. it's almost non existent. i wont pay for it if that's what they have to show me.

they did something where i had to validate via email for some reason. the emails arent coming to me. no matter what i do.
i tried to get ahold of them in several ways. even sales. they ignore me.

I think TeamViewer is free for personal use.

suppose i'm lucky then, i haven't used their customer service for anything and now, i never will :)

BTW The idea to use the RDP protocol is a great one as well, shame on me for no suggesting that, as it's been pretty solid as a standby over the years too.

For me there always seemed to be an annoying lag/screen refresh and lack of fea tures with the VNC solutions. Not sure where they are now with things its been a few years since I played with them.

if you ever get locked out from using it like many people were, you will be SOL like me.
