but runs very smoothly on my G3 PPC running under Debian 8. I had experimented with a windows client once under wine, but could not get it to connect to anything for some reason.
There are gopher client add-ins for Firefox - look for OverbiteFF.
I am aware of Overbite and even have their Android client on my phone.
Gopher on a phone reminds me of what WAP was supposed to be - lean, to the point, just the info and no crap.
Hey Guys,
I found a cool graphical gopher client for linux not long ago in the repo. It is written in python I believe and I found it in the debian and lubuntu (or ubuntu) repo. It has a very basic look to it; it kinda reminds me of an early 90s web browser. It was a little glitchy on my IBM Thinkpad X41, but runs very smoothly on my G3 PPC running under Debian 8. I had experimented with a windows client once under wine, but could not get it to connect to anything for some reason.

What's the name of the client?

Most older web browsers think Ie < 7, or Netscape Navigator <= 6, have Gophe support iirc.

I have actually used Netscape 4.8 for this purpose and it functions very wel
in that capacity. I was running it under wine on Ubuntu 12.04 before I upgraded my OS. Amazingly, this version on Netscape is capable of rendering webpages (not very well of course as it was released around 2002 as the last 4.X version, but it can do it).

A gopher blog - love it!
Synchronet has a gopher server, and Firefox has a plugin called OverBite that lets you browse the gophersphere.

some 3.5 million selectors (the equivalent of "web pages") in some 160 Gopher servers.

Interesting. I have fond memories of Gopher when I first got on the Internet in 1994. The WWW was still young, and Gopher had the most useful information, so I spent a lot of time on it and found some useful
resources. I'll have to take a look around and see what's on Gopher these days.

As others said, there are plugins which HTML-ify the Gopher protocol and allows
to view Gopherspace in Firefox. There's also a Gopher Protocol Client available
here: https://sites.google.com/site/matjaz85/gopherclient
But personally, I prefer the OverbiteFF plugin for Firefox.
Here's a list of all known Gopher sites to explore gopher://gopher.floodgap.com/1/world/
And thanks to Rob, all Synchonet BBSes are also Gopher Servers by default, so credit to Digital Man for making the tools to keep the flame alive. In a recent
version Synchronet was updated to allow also downloading from Gopher Protocol!

i didnt really have fond memories. it was a pain in the ass to use.
but still, i used it out of necessity in the 90s.
So...anyone still using Gopher?
It still exists, despite the web. I use it at times...there are
distilled-to-text feeds from news sites (eat THAT, RSS). And it still provide
decent access to old file archives...was looking for some old Amiga stuff and found it quite easily.

on MSN and others networks; if you know how to understand how to send commands to a computer, there are people there to talk back.
Maybe you can make a face on TV :)

I hit bboard on occasion, could never really get into it. I use com on rare occasions (mostly when I listen to anonradio). I *do* like the community as a whole.

I wish there was a decent gopher client for Chrome. I'm using Overbite
for Firefox, and have advertised the Gopher interface on my BBS from
time to time.

It's nice for a change. I think it's a little archaic but good for nastalgia. Most people don't know SDF began as a BBS. Just like this
one.

I used Overbite myself for a while, nowadays I just use the Floodgap gopher-to-http proxy out of laziness.

natural fit. It doesn't seem like it would be all that difficult to make
a free gopher hosting service backed by an alternative VCS such as fossil. That would be fun to make or use.
