• Windows NT / Dec Alpha C compiler question....

From Winthorpe@VERT/WOOWOO to All on Wed Jan 20 13:50:43 2010
I don't know if anyone here has ever used Visual C++ for the DEC Alpha, but I'm wondering if anyone else has fought with it as much as I have...?

I have version 8 from the NT 3.5 SDK, and you have to run it without optimizations to get anything to run, version 10 from Visual C++ 4.0 which also sucks, but VC 6 seems "ok".....

How did people cope with such a poor compiler?

As much as I'd love to throw MS under the bus, it's got DEC stamped all over it, did they deliberatly sabatauge the compiler??

And no, while I may have VC6 I haven't even dreampt of trying to compile synchronet for it...... even if it did work, I think I'm the last NT/Alpha user out there.

Probably... Anyone else still running that hardware is probably using Linux or BSD.

Speaking of which, anyone feel like porting Synchronet to the Cray-2?
(yeah right, like anyone with the money for a Cray-2 would be running a
BBS on it.... But then again... if I had the money for a Cray-2, just
imagine what I could do.... get a bank of like 30 modems, and a T-2
straight to the cray-2, re-compile Synchronet to allow for like 100
telnet's in and about 30 ftp's in... Hey, what the heck, if you've got
the money for a system like that, you'd have the money for the phone
    lines and the internet bandwidth!)

Synchronet already supports 100+ terminal server nodes and 30+ FTP clients. No recompiling would be necessary (to support those numbers, at least).

I was implying having Synchronet run ON the Cray computer ;-)
Not that I personally own one, but would love to own one and if I did,
you better believe I'd love to have synchronet running on it....

Wish I had an HP2000E system to run it on.

Blowing bubbles costs more than buying it.

Seriously, Synchronet wouldn't benefit from a vector computer.

I figured that the electricity costs would eat someone alive. That said, putting synchronet on it would be a fun "because it's there" exercise to score some nerd points. Heck, I think it'd be awsesome, just so long as his neighbor doesn't notice the extension cord... :)

Dude, I could care less about the cost issue (assuming i had the $$$
to buy a cray-2.... ) It would be increadibly awesome to have the
login screen say it was running on a Cray2 and maybe have an option to
create user accounts on the cray and allow users to shell from the BBS
to the cray... And SBBS could handle all the e-mail on the cray.... ;-)

I think it may have been a Cray-2 that was "free" to anyone who came and got it... which involved a lot of construction as the building was built around the computer. Some university, but I can't remember the details.
