isnt that the doorgame that is shareware? should be freeware in this age.
i would make it ibbs and charge yearly for a subscription to the home
server instead.
isnt that the doorgame that is shareware? should be freeware in this

I like how you say "the" door game that is shareware, like it's the only one. :)
Although shareware BBS door games are rare these days, I believe
there are still some that are shareware.
continue using software. Barring significant new versions, I think commercial software should be something that you pay for once and use it
running their servers, although I still don't like the idea of paying a recurring fee for a game..
Although shareware BBS door games are rare these days, I believe

so you are talking about doormud and the other one. both are abandoned.
the other one that i cant remember the name to is an exitilus clone.

you never heard of games people paid a monthly fee to play?
i'm not a fan of paying for doorgames PERIOD. i think it's stupid.
the other one that i cant remember the name to is an exitilus clone.
There are a lot more than those - There's LORD, LORD 2, and Planets: TEOS just to name a few.
particularly like the model of paying a recurring fee to continue to use software.

they're not newer games. i GET that every doorgame doorgame from the past is pretty much shareware.
particularly like the model of paying a recurring fee to continue to use software.
that's not what i was suggesting exactly. i was suggesting a business
model where they have the game that connects to a server. this server handles the load of users and allows all participants to connect like an ibbs league. operator would collect a small fee to cover server costs and
i am not pushing it off as a way to make money. i think all doorgames
should be free and many of my doorgame dev buddies now feel the same way.
I'm still curious why you feel that all door games should be free? Do you feel that door games no longer have any value that would equate to monetary pricing? While I'm thankful and think it's great that most BBS door games are now freeware or donationware, I still think it's up to the author of
the software to decide to sell it or give it away. I can understand why many BBS doors are free these days though - These days, there just isn't a
but it's their program and they can do whatever they wanna do. like i said
a few of my buddies were doorgame devs and lord igms creators and they believed strongly that all games should be free at this point.
while people like bbsfiles' doug thinks they should have a pricetag to
give them worth.

Is that because you believe door games don't have value anymore? Or
perhaps that you don't play door games?
a few of my buddies were doorgame devs and lord igms creators and they believed strongly that all games should be free at this point.
Do they mean all games in general, or just BBS door games?
while people like bbsfiles' doug thinks they should have a pricetag to give them worth.
I somewhat agree in that there is some psychology in pricing, but at the same time, price doesn't necessarily equate to worth/value. As time goes by, I keep seeing more high-quality software that do things that you previously had to pay lots of money for that are free, at least for home use. Examples are Linux, MySQL, PostgreSQL, OpenOffice/LibreOffice, and VirtualBox. Although these are available at no financial cost, I think
they have a lot of worth.

I'd be interested in taking a look at it and trying to determine if it'd be within my capabilities to help out on. Forseeable life changes
in the future might destroy the amount of time I'm able to put in on
this but for now I've got a couple of hours each night I could probably put in a bit of time on it with, and I've been looking for something to help me brush up on C++ for awhile.

I'm not a great coder, but I worked as a game tester/associate producer for a long time with EA/Sony/Nin/MS, if you need someone to playtest I
may have some free time here and there. I'm not running linux for my
bbs, but I can setup a vpc for the sole purpose of helping out. If
that's no bueno, lemme know when you're ready for Windows testing.

terribly new. Maybe someone can point to a BBS Door game that I've overlooked that's still updated and has features not found in every other BBS game?
I just can't pop $25 for lord/lord2/bre/fe/fh or whatever. I'd feel better if I could make a donation, or if the author required a specific registration when the game goes over a certain# of runs/users, but before that it's pay whatever.
isn't being actively improved I don't see the point of reg fees, you're basically paying someone to give you a key for your 69 vw bug. I guess a
Andy, I have source both in Linux and Windows. Whichever you prefer. I
can port what's been worked on to the other OS or vise-versa. You can try it out on my BBS (telnet://vintagebbsing.com:23) or other BBSes that carry it, or even set it up on your own board if you wish.
I believe LORD, for one, is still being updated - The latest version is 4.08, which was released in 2006.
Not sure I see the analogy there - There are people who put a lot of work into restoring old cars to new or like-new condition and then sell them for probably more than they're worth in the non-restored condition.

Hello!
Hi Gryphon,
What's it about? I've done my share of coding of bbs door games before. I'd beinterested in hearing more about it.
Legion is a role-playing style BBS door game, ascii/ansi text based. The main idea is to find a prisoner named Legion and free him. Once I get
the first one finished, I'll be working on a sequel.
Cool. Like I said, I've written and released a few door games in the past, both linux and dos: Virtual Sysop III, Space Dynasty Elete. I've even recently released a few Mystic BBS mpl doorgames: Gryphon's Greed and

I don't think there is a 4.8 or even a 4.6 version of LORD. The highest they have listed on their web site ( http://www.gameport.com/bbs/lord.html
) is 4.07. And I've seen a 4.08 beta floating around too.
I also bought a LORD key back in the early 90s, and I think that only works up to version 4.00a. I ended up contacting Gameport when I upgraded to a new version, and they were nice enough to send me a reg key for the newer versions, since I already had a reg code.

I've never tried LORD 4.7 and don't know where to get it. The latest version I've used (or even seen available anywhere) is 4.08 beta. At any rate, I got an updated registration code that works with 4.08.

think 4.8 (or call it 4.08 if you or anybody wants to) is pretty stable

4.08 is what the version is.. Why would you call it 4.8 or anything else? You'll just end up confusing people (particularly new sysops) by mentioning versions that don't exist.
despite almost everyone referring to 4.0X as 4.X,... you understand
what we mean, right?
No. I honestly thought at first that there was a 4.8 version. I'm
confused as to why anyone would refer to 4.08 as 4.8 - the numbers are not the same..

i think you are talking about some 4.7 version. that's when he added
the new ansis. then preslar said people were complaining about then
and he released another 4.7 with the old lord menus. i'm not sure if
he taked on a new version number or not.
he then went on to take out some of the crashing, etc issues with 4.7
and i think 4.8 (or call it 4.08 if you or anybody wants to) is pretty stable except for a few clear screen issues.
i released a 4.8 pack with an executable i hex edited [fixed display issues] and i included both the old menus and the ansi art menus so
people could choose.
the 4.8 i have doesnt have spelling issues. i also think there were a
few v4.8's out there because i was working with him and datastream's users were reporting lord problems.
but you have people like lordtime who distribute betas when they arent supposed to and that may be why some people have this 4.8 with
spelling errors. i'm not sure the current one on that website has
those errors. it's also possible that i have a 4.8 someplace that
nobody else has on my bbses and that's why i've only had a few
problems.
to sum it up, it's a messy situation! :D

Ok, I just checked. I'm running Lord 4.08 beta in dosemu. I can run lordcfg and lord in local mode, but when I try to run it from one of my nodes, it gives an error:
ERROR : 201 Range check error
Error Address: 374B:050C
I've tried both CHAIN.TXT and DOOR.SYS dropfiles.
I'm using the Linux version of Mystic 1.10.a21
Does anybody know what could be causing this? I suppose I could try an older version and see if that works.
Are you by chance using MIS as your telnet server? If so, it won't work
for some odd reason. Most linux users are still using ddtelnetd and
xinetd because of this problem with the door games.
I wasn't sure at first, but I do now. Although I'm still confused as to
why the version numbers are commonly mistaken.
I supplied him with most of the ansis. It was definitely a 4.08 beta. I
have it running here. His plan was to release two versions, long before anyone ever thought about complaining, though, so I don't know where that came from.

Yeah, that's one of the major things I remember. Lots of text overwriting text. And a lot of spelling errors that weren't in 4.06.
Where'd Michael run off to these days anyways? When is the last time you
talked to Brian even? Haven't seen those guys around in quite some time
now.
Must've been after I stopped messing with the betas, because the 4.07s and 4.08s I have running here are terrible compared to 4.06. Also, some of the colors were changed that made some of the display annoying.
Yeah that's true. That's why I just stuck with 4.06. There's really nothing major added to the two newer versions, and seems to me to be the most stable.
Very. Too bad Michael gave up on it. I would've rather seen him say "screw Gameport" and just start releasing his own stuff. :)

cause everyone was calling it 4.7 since it came out.

Well in all the years I've had LORD, this is the first time I've ever seen anyone use such (nonexistent) version numbers for it.

Nope, I'm using ddtelnetd, not MIS.

well you're pretty picky. like i said even the dev called it that when he would talk about it.

Then it's most like something configured on your end. If you can type 'dosemu' from the command prompt and end up at C:\, we'll need a snippet
of your batch file and script to run dosemu.

Nick
Snippet? How's about my whole script?
I've tried running it with both door.sys and chain.txt. I've changed
the lord settings many times.
