I'm thinking about publishing articles in the form of an electronic magazine, distributed in a .zip with a few text files with the articles. Which software should I use? I would like it to be in ascii format and have some level of ascii art decor where the text would be inserted.

Sounds cool. When I published a similar venture, I used MS Office PowerPoint. It provided me the ability to change backgrounds, font, add pictures etc. You can then save the project as a PDF too.
