    "Way off" is too pessimistic.

I wouldn't say way off but I think it is a ways off yet.

ISP's for whatever there reasons are won't budge at this time.

That depends. Many ISPs offer IPv6, but there are a couple of incumbents that are dragging their feet. :(

I wonder what happened to that pioneer spirit that once made
    Fidonet florish...

Nodes are doing what they can with what they have. That has always
    been the case.

There was a time when Fidonet sysops created ways to make things work that they did not have yet. They didn't wait for others, but took he initiative themsleves. That is how Fidonet was born in the first place. Someone wrote a Fidonet mailer...

You do not have to wait for Teksavvy to give you IPv6. He.net is still offering 6to4 tunnels for free. You could set up a tunnel and have IPv6. Today...

Teksavvy... IIRC the late Joe Delahaye had an account with Teksavvy. He had native IPv6. Have you asked Teksavvy about IPv6?

Yes, I think that IPv6 is workable here. When I was with Telus I had native IPv6, and I see some with Shaw also have IPv6. I don't know if that is native or a tunnel.

Back in the day when there were 35,000 nodes supporting who knows how many users we had a critical mass. There were many programmers and hackers making things happen.

There are still things happening today like binkd, Husky, FMail, D'Bridge and others. Still actively maintained and developed but our numbers today are much smaller than those days.

You do not have to wait for Teksavvy to give you IPv6. He.net is still offering 6to4 tunnels for free. You could set up a tunnel and have
    IPv6. Today...

What I would like is native IPv6. I hope I never need to use a tunnel to be in contact with other nodes but if it happens that way I'll use a tunnel.

Teksavvy... IIRC the late Joe Delahaye had an account with Teksavvy.
He had native IPv6. Have you asked Teksavvy about IPv6?

Yes, Teksavvy does support IPv6 and so does the gear they have provided me with although I have never had a chance to see it. My connection to the internet is provided by Shaw Cable and they don't put IPv6 on the wire, not here in my town anyway.

I see. Whois says your IP is issued by Teksavvy. I did not realise it went via Shaw Cable.

Teksavvy resells internet services from the established telecoms here in Canada. I had Teksavvy for awhile via Rogers cables, but then switched to Rogers proper when their service starting suffering at the beginning of the pandemic. They offer cable service through Rogers, Cogeco & Shaw as well as DSL service through Bell & Telus.

I believe Teksavvy does offer IPv6 through their DSL service, but the speeds are usually much slower than cable can offer.

Yes. Teksavvy is my ISP. I have a choice of cable or DSL service. I might get an IPv6 address with DSL service that would come from Telus but I don't have the service or hardware to look closer at that.

I'm just curious.. do you get an IPv6 address as well as IPv4 with that service and is there a difference in cost?

    With Teksavvy I didn't get IPv6 at all*, once I switched to Rogers I got both IPv4 & 6.

(* I did get IPv6 for a month with Teksavvy, but then it disappeared. The reverse DNS on the IPv6 address said Rogers, so I think it was probably a mistake).

Sorry, I hit send too soon.

With Teksavvy I was paying about $60 +tax /mo for 150Mb down & 15 up, I now pay $107 +tax for gigabit down and 30 up. When I first got the gigabit service there was a $40 /mo credit for the first year, so it was really about the same price (for that first year).

I used to be able to expense my home internet with my last job, but have since lost that perk. I may look at trying to reduce that month expense at some point, but gigabit is nice...

How about getting the service directly from Shaw? I see in the list op IPv6 nodes that Dallas Hinton, 1:153/7715 has native IPv6 from SHAW communications.

I can't justify the added $480/year price tag.

Odd, it's standard included here. In the beginnig I didn't even know I had it.

I think Alan is referring to the price difference between Teksavvy and Shaw cable. Not an extra for IPv6.

In the beginnig I didn't even know I had it.

ISPs that are introducing IPv6 often claim the transfer will be "invisible" for the ordinary user.

Hence my assumption that there are Fidonet systems that can make outgoing IPv6 calls without the sysop being aware of it.

    Expensive...

While it is much faster than what I have I am not sure if I need those speeds or if I would get IPv6.

I can't justify the added $480/year price tag.

Understandable. I would not pay that either for a speed upgrade. Here Delta Fiber is coming with a Fiber connection of 1.5 GB down AND up for EUR 60/month. But I do not need that speed. Yet...
