    When the loudness-wars started with CD's, I largely stopped buying as well.

    Ha! When I was in my collecting-phase, mannnn I spent more on shipping on whatever obscure musical nonsense I insisted on collecting, than maybe what it was all worth in the end.

    Nobody wants my collection. My daughter just streams everything off Spotify, to say nothing about the vintage hi-fi gear here I'm looking to get rid of.

    Growing up, my parents never listened to music so I spent a lot of time on my own listening to the radio and I'd hear the occasional song that I liked so I'd go out and get the 7" single. I don't think I ever bought an album in my life until I bought a copy of Hunting High and Low from a friend at school. Still, my musical tastes were pretty limited. I mostly enjoyed new wave/synthpop of the era.

    It was a long time until I got into oldies (60's) and rock like The Stones or The Who.

    I have been buying up 7" singles (45 rpms for 'merkins) 100 in a box for $18 shipped. You never know, you might find a gem or two.

    I am guessing portability, availability, and durability. While cassettes and 8-tracks are also portable, they would fail one or two of the other "tests." Finding something to play them on would also be a challenge.

    IIRC, vinyl has also made somewhat of a comeback in recent years with younger people who are not looking for portability.
