• Bot Checker

From Netsurge@21:4/154 to All on Thu Aug 22 23:53:52 2019
A while ago someone mentioned a stand alone app that is used as a telnet frontend to check if the connecting user is a bot or is port sweeping.

You know "press esc twice to continue". The app waited for a key combination and then forwarded traffic to the bbs on another port. Kinda like phenom's
bot checker but it was either a python script of written in C.

Can someone refresh my memory on what it was called.

Hi Frank, it's on the Phenom mods... but I don't know it's name, others will
    :)

Sorry, I have no idea about the python/C script.

For my second BBS (Proboard, DOS based) I`m using a mailer (Frontdoor).
Not only, but also to "block" bots.

I know there is a prog called NET2BBS that comes with the NETFOSS package
that does this. You can dl it here Http://pcmicro.com/netfoss

    cheers

It's included with Mystic now. Check at:

    mystic\themes\default\scripts\botcheck.mps

    From botcheck.mps:

BOTCHECK.MPS: Example script to force users to immediately press ESCAPE
twice upon connection within 15 seconds or else their
    connection will be closed.

To install: Copy this as "connect.mps" in your theme's script directory
and then use MPLC to compile it (mplc -T will compile all theme scripts)

Not the StackFault one. The way this one is implemented it doesn't support ANSI, which isn't a deal breaker for me.

Thanks for sharing - I'll have to take a peek at g00r00's botcheck.mps... I love that he always includes the MPS, and I wanna play around (more) with my ESCx2...

I wanna do a HyperNODE-like A-Z, 1-9 instead of ESC, that alternates w/ each caller...

I do similar, but since 2oFB isn't very ASCII friendly anyway, I do cheat and use custom ANSI fonts for the countdown timer.

But I'm gonna take a l00k and try to modify it a bit m0re - as my last post said, I don't wanna use the ESC button for users who can't press it.

I support either 2xESC (that's me! twice!) or 2xTAB. I don't really have any bot issues so guess it works out :)

i've been hanging up on connections without ansi support for years lol. also just run on port 23. no bots ever manage to idle at the login prompt.

ip ban list is several thousand lines sometimes though.. i think it starts to take a few seconds to make it through it.. normally i'd prefer to keep it but
    i gotta clear it.

I've been on 23 now since 2018. I was getting a lot of bot hits, and you are right not many ever manage to idle at the login prompt, with the bot checker they don't get that far. I have though locked out the communist countries at the router level.. LOL

I do it a different way. Instead of having people slap the ESC key, I have my BBS set up as an ANSI-only BBS and in the login I have a brief intro and ask people to press the number 1 on their keyboards. This logs them in as ANSI. The extra step of having to press the number 1 on the keyboard slows the bots down quite a bit.

Of course they still call and call and call, but most of them don't make it to the actual login screen. After 3 failed logins, the get banned.
