  • the big fat internet.

    is the internet so fat and wasted these days..?

    junk and more junk for such a thing that started off sooo cool.

    i tried to use dial up the other day. funny thing was i was able to access older sites that are mostly text based and have simple images relatively fast.

    thinking about this, i have a collection of old laptops, 486-pIII era and old g3/g4 computers and even using them on modern sites almost locks them up as
    the browsers dont support the newer standards HTML video, PHP etc..

    thing was when i loaded older sites even on ethernet or wifi connections on these old computers worked fine no lock ups or seizures from big fat web scripts.

    watching videos online these days for most older PowerPC macs (pre g4) is basically not supported even for win 9x systems

    has the internet just become a big slab of garbage too heavy for my old computer to handle? or do i like many who are completely nostalgic about the early days of the internet and online services need to let go of our
    dinosaurs? haha


    right now i am writing this on my powerbook G4, still my every day computer

    do any of you still have older stuff you use on the regular?

    Absolutely. I have a couple of Atari 8-bits, a TI-99/4A, and Spectrum clone that all go online (with the aid of Raspberry Pis). I've also got an Apple
    IIGS that I'd like to get online but haven't started messing with yet.

    As for what I do with them online, check out http://irata.online. The
    internet is a lot more than the world wide web. Look at us, here, now, for example.

    Yes, it has become mostly junk and garbage. Even the "useful" sites have allowed themselves to be bloated down with ads that slow them to a crawl,
    even on a quad-core machine.

    IMHO, BBSes are one of the few good things about it.

    DON'T LET GO! There are enough folks trying to erase or even rewrite history, don't loose ours! There is enough room for our history to co-exsist in todays world..were here using BBS' in this day and age talking about it, thats
    good! ;)

    I still use a 8 bit BBC B Micro to connect to BBS,s using a serial cable to my pc and a hayes emulator again on the PC The BBC has all of 32k of ram but
    boots in less than 1 sec On the BBC I use a ROM based terminal Termulatort
    The BBC I use was built in 1983 by Acorn Computers who went on to design RISC chips If you need any more info Im happy to help.
