From Grease to All on Wed Oct 9 08:58:42 2019
I've been running the .tar version of Synch on my Manjaro linuxbox and been having problems missin programs or pars of programs. Seems the make install didn't migrate everything over from /sbbs/src/sbbs3.
So I went nuclear, and deleted the /sbbs directory and installed cvs and did that version. Everything was in the right place. Only problem was now I got error 98 binding problems onn all my ports.
I did RELEASE=1, nope, for some reason Manjaro doesn't seem to have netstat. So I whipped out the unix snch page and did a clean. Wrong thing to do. It took out the exec files, bbut nothing else. So I re cvs'ed Synch.
I see that I uninstalled wrong, but how can I unbind the ports and what I presume to be a SYMLINK problem also?

Been there. I added the REUSEADDR=1 . That's where I got that and netstat from. I don't have netstat to verify. I'll have to download it this evening to verify. I don't know the time it takes to reset. I tried two hours later last night to no avail.

That's unfortunate - this usually solves the problem you're describing (once your BBS has been fully shut down and restarted anyway).

You say you're seeing this problem with all of your ports. Can you confirm that it's failing to bind ports for all of its services - including telnet, rlogin, ssh, ftp, http, and so on? Another common problem is that your server's sshd is already using port 22, and apache or something is already listening on 80, and so on.

This is the only thing I had up. All ports were working correctly uner the .tar sbbs. When I went to the cvs version 22, 23, 80, and another one were in the error 98 bind.
When I get home from work, it' be at least 20 hours. Just sitting there after I re-downloaded the cvs and ran make. I'll reboot and see if that clears it out.
    Fingers crossed.

Are you starting as root or using sudo? Using sudo I hope.

When I recycle sbbs it has a bit of trouble binding ports but that usually clears up in a few minutes.

It lasted longer than that. I finall went back to .tar method and also downloaded the 317b.tgz file with the src and dev. The only one I didn't download was run. It's back up and running now.

Your back up and running and that's the important part.

It's odd you'd have trouble with the cvs method but not with just copying
    the .tgz.

One thing with the cvs method is that it's easier to stay upto date
    (well, I find it easier).

I know that 3.17b is not that old but there are nice new things in the
current version. UTF-8 support and duece's new JS lord and also lord2
    underway.

Since it shows an update in the section howto, I could back up the exec
and do a cvs update and see how it goes.

I was thinking that but it's unknown teritory for me. Best to ask the guys in Synchronet circles.

If you have some space and a place for it, I would go the cvs route and work through any problems you encounter. The fact you did that before suggests something is not quite right there and may be a problem for you currently as well.

The problem is probably easy to solve. Figuring out what the problem is may or may not be, unfortunately.

True. It just seems that it has trouble moving stuff from the src to exec and other directories.

Is it the symlinks causing you trouble? I always use RELEASE=1 on my make command line. Actually I have RELEASE=1 in src/build/localdefs.mk so I
    don't forget.

I did at one time manage to build a debug build and the symlinks were
pointing to the src/sbbs3/gcc.linux.x64.exe.release directory that was
empty because I ran src/cleanall.sh. That's never going to work. ;)

A debug build is going to be bigger and heavier than a release build but
will run just as well. As long as your symlinks point to the exe's you
want to run you should be OK.

I did do the RELEASE=1 when I did it. I just didnt know if it would stll be active when I deleted the .tar sbbs version and then went to the cvs version/

Would that cause the posrts to not clear and they are still looking for the setup?

No, it may be default today to do a release version, I'm not sure. In the
past a debug build was default if you didn't add RELEASE=1 to your make
command line. I haven't done a fresh install in a number of years.

You could add RELEASE=1 to src/build/localdef.mk to get a release build
without adding RELEASE=1 to your make command line. That file doesn't
exist by default so you will need to make it yourself. You can add other
things there too like USE_DOSEMU=1 or SYMLINKS=1 if you use those
    options.

Would that cause the posrts to not clear and they are still looking for the setup?

No, the only time I have had trouble with ports binding is if I forget to
start sbbs with sudo. Only root can access ports below 1024 in linux so
that is why you have to start sbbs with sudo because many of the ports it
    uses are below 1024.

If I recycle sbbs (make changes in scfg) it may take a few minutes for
all the ports to bind but they do bind eventually.

The [UNIX] section of your ctrl/sbbs.ini is also important, the user and
group to run the BBS as.

you might want to try and check to see what is already running on those
ports as there may be some other programs running on those ports in the
OS. Also, you might have to give the user running SBBS sudo privileges
so that it can bind to ports lower than 1024.
