Since I loved Telegard but never have been able to get it running under MS-DOS on VMware (at least not the Y2K patched version) I'm gonna give Telegard/2 a try. Just got to get OS/2 running, either on a Pentium 4 I have on a shelf or under VMware.
Any advice on both matters are more than welcome.

I haven't run Telegard for years but I really liked it when I did.
I was told the installer wouldn't run unless the date and/or time was
set
back to a pre y2k time frame. I don't know if that's true since I
haven't
tried but it might be woth a shot.

I don't have any advice, but it does sound like fun... keep us posted
:)
Dunno if installing OS/2 on hardware in 2019 is my idea of fun but hey it's a challenge so why not. Getting OS/2 to accept incoming
connections via telnet and then passing them onto virtual com ports for Telegard to play with is a entirely different matter.

I was considering the latest OS/2 about two years ago. I forget what
they call it but I downloaded the live cd and gave it a spin.

ArcaOS?

Yes, that's the one. I think I still have the CDRW aroun here
somewhere..

Is this a free demo? I cannot find anything to download without
purchasing the OS (starts at 129 Euro).

Last time I tried it wasn't too hard (but I was using eComStation) it seemed to run fine on my PC, but yeah getting the SIO and VModem
working
was a pain. I think the most annoying thing is you can't register it anymore. (the SIO drivers that is).
Will you be using Warp 4 or something newer?

Sean Dennis, a sysop on Micronet (and Fidonet) has a virtual image
for OS/2
that I believe is meant to be installed under VMware and with BBSing
in
mind. He is also the moderator of the BBSing 2.0 group on Facebook,
where
he has been discussing the image.

It was quite impressive and looked much as I remember OS/2 but my nic
was not detected so I had no internet to surf at all. I don't know what
it would take to get intenet support but if it could be done it would
be hard to resist.

Thanks for the info. I don't have an Facebook account do not intend of getting one. :)
There is a crack available for SIO 1.60d which the author has said is OK to use. Look for SIOREG.ZIP.

All it would take is the *right* card, just like the old days. You
could
probably find one of those realtek RTL8139-based PCI cards for a buck
at a
thrift shop, or $10 on Amazon.

I have Telegard running in a VM under Windows 2003 server. Telnet
address is: wcalt.rdfig.net and your welcome to check it out.

Thanks! How did you get it running? I assume it's the DOS version and if
I have a box of old 3Com 3c905, 3c509, etc so I'm all sorted there I think. If it doesn't work with the 3Com cards then clearly it's not worth doing.

I loved the old 3C509s. I'm pretty sure I ran OS/2 with 905s back in
the day,
they should be compatible with most anything these days.

Yeah, 3c509 was the golden standard for ISA connected NIC's for sure. I remember fighting NE2000 cards back in the day but that got old pretty quick once I got my hands on a couple of 3c509.

Yes, rarely got to play with one ($$$), but they were a nice card in
their day.

I always kept an NE2000 card for use with obscure OSes - I used MINIX
on and
off, and NE2000 was one of the only cards it supported out of the
box.

Yeah I remember them being really expensive back in the day. They
dropped in price after a few years and they where sold under other
brands (Farallon if memory serves) that 3Com owned to a much lower
price.
