As I type this, very severe winter storms are moving across the USA. I am talking about temperatures as low as NEGATIVE FIFTY DEGREES F. I'm praying that we all stay safe. Prepare for power outages. Got food for a week or two? Flashlights? An alternative way to heat your home? How about a winter sleeping bag to crawl into? I'm getting ready. Good luck to you all.

    Hello Alonzo!

As I type this, very severe winter storms are moving across the USA. I am talking about temperatures as low as NEGATIVE FIFTY DEGREES F. ...

I'm not hearing temps to reach that low in my location (S. and
SE Ontario) ..just rain and then some snow in the mix while
negative temps remain in the single negative Celcius range, and
    then some more rain.

But power outtages are very likely as connected paths are
    vulnerable.

I'm in MN we grew up with things like this. It can be scary for people who don't deal with this yearly. If you don't use your heater often make sure it's working good. If you have a in home fire place clean it, and have some good wood inside that is room temp and dry. Its easy to bring in more wood after its going well but it sucks to try to warm up and dry wood in the cold. :D

The upside you can use the outside to help fill up your ice cubes quickly. :D

The temperature drops I'm reading about are crazy - something like 50
    degrees in 12 hours?

I'm on the California coast, no weather warnings here. But we have power outages often, I'm up in the hills with lots of trees and pole-delivered
    power.

Camping is a good for half-assed prepping. I have 2 camp stoves, spare
gas, sleeping bags, battery-powered lanterns and a solar lantern that
doubles as a phone charger. In the back yard I have a gas BBQ and one of
those heating elements that sits on top of a propane canister.

We bought a half a cord of firewood, and my trump card for power outages
    - a Prius with an 1100 watt DC to AC inverter.

Party at my house. Bring booze.

However, I live in an area where we rarely get much snow, and it rarely stays freezing very long. So, there are a lot of people here who aren't really used to driving in snow & ice, and those weather conditions tend to create a bit of chaos here.

"Cold" doesn't really equate to "storms", neccesarily. It's cold here
    too, but not storming.

The area wher I live tends to be fairly mild, and we normally

Well.... weather does that sometimes. That's my whole point, really.

Yes, and "normal" is made up of the average of lows and highs. If
things weren't "lower than normal" sometimes, they would be exactly the
    same, every day.

It's not meant to be too snarky. Perhaps it's just my mood from
watching the endless "news" talking heads rant and rave about how
terrible it is. It's just freaking winter. And yes.... I know about
winter, having grown up in New England, an hour from the Canadian

We used to get temperatures like this decades ago, but it hasn't happend lately and many people are unprepared. Plus we have thousands of people without power - over 230,000 in Maine, 120,000 in New Hampshire, 96,000 in New York, and so on.

Today in my section of the country it was - 30 with the wind
chill. That's unusually cold for this time of year, Winter or
not. Half of the country is experiencing temperatures below zero.
We used to get temperatures like this decades ago, but it hasn't
happend lately and many people are unprepared. Plus we have
thousands of people without power - over 230,000 in Maine,
120,000 in New Hampshire, 96,000 in New York, and so on.

I get that. Yes, it is unusual. Again, I think I'm just a little irked
by the way the media covers the subject. I know it's no joke for those experiencing it. I grew up in Vermont, in the 1970's. Below zero temps
and 2-3 foot snowstorms were the "norm" back then, and things are
starting to cycle back to that pattern, I think.

I do have to say that anyone who lives in New England and *ISN'T*
prepared for such weather....... is an idiot. Sorry, but it's true.

Yeah, I grew up with temperatures like this too so I am used to
it. Many people aren't. I know people in Florida are whining
because the temperature is about + 54 degrees.

I'm sure some people in Florida are whining, just like they are in every
    other state, too.

In my portion of Florida, it is 20 degrees (F) this morning, and the
high for the day is supposed to be in the mid-30's. Same for the next
    few days.

In reviewing my weather station data for the year, this morning's temp was the lowest for the entire calendar year (and probably going back several years).

Here is Maryland this morning, it was 3 degrees (F). What is crazy is yesterday's high temp was 54 degrees (F) at 1am in the morning. A 51 degree drop in just barely over 24 hours.

As I type this, very severe winter storms are moving across the USA. I am talking about temperatures as low as NEGATIVE FIFTY DEGREES F. I'm
praying that we all stay safe. Prepare for power outages. Got food for a week or two? Flashlights? An alternative way to heat your home? How
about a winter sleeping bag to crawl into? I'm getting ready. Good luck
    to you all. -Alonzo-

I'm a few days behind when this was posted but have been keeping up with the overseas news and can see how bad it's got in the USA etc. Hope you guys are doing OK.

Yeah, I have a friend that moved there to live in the warm and he's fine because hes from MN so this is like the perfect temp for him.

    Yikes :)

If it helps boxing day is currently sunny and 20c ... oh wait, that probably doesn't so just think of me in winter woollies if that eases the pain :)

New bucket list item: Spend xmas day in a warmer climate & ditch the turkey for some BBQ!

It was sausages, chicken nibbles, steak and some shrimps y/day... we gave about 2/3 of it to the kids to take home but there's a goodly amount left for the meal today.

I'm about to go out as my wife wants yo do boxing day sales... remember me fondly if I don't make it back! :)

I just went back and checked my weather station archives and on Christmas Day last year, it was 60F (15C) (which is really warm for that time of the year here in Maryland - USA).

Fast forward one year (this year) and it was 3F (-16C) degrees in the morning.

We are used to the weather here going from one extreme to the other, pretty rapidly.

Yes. Also, as global climate change continues, we will see
more intense and more frequent storms of this nature. That
itself is noteworthy, and in is driving some of the coverage
    of this storm.

Then we should learn to exploit this and store the surplus water for distribution to the areas that do not have water.

Moving water is really hard, unfortunately. One of the most
dangerous outcomes of climate change will be desertification:
previously arable land will cease to be viable for agriculture
and become inhospitable to human habitation. That will in
turn spurn a lot of movement of people; this is the sort of
    thing that causes wars.

A lot of people don't understand deserts; they are areas of
climatic extremes, not just "hot and sandy."
