From opicron@21:3/126 to All on Fri Jan 27 17:50:09 2023
Hiya all. I found 6 tapes from my old BBS and data and I want to restore the data from them. They are from 1992-1997 low density.

I remember backing up the data with colorado backup software. Anybody know if there is some modern tapedrive which can be used with USB to restore them?

    Fingers crossed..

Ooh jeesh that's a great find. Sadly I don't know of any such software, but I wish you good luck. I'm interested to know what you find on them =)

AFAIK there are no modern USB QIC-80 / DC-2120 drives. You have to find an old one. They usually connect to the floppy controller or parallel port. And then get some old software for reading it.
Or maybe you find someone or a retro computer club in your city that still have a working drive.

Yeah no luck so far. I will definately add all files (if releases) to this board. And expect a filelist.txt somewhere.

Not going into that ;). I am now googling companies who restore old tapes. Only found one in US at the moment, quite far from EU. But if thats the only one I will contact them.

Or maybe I should donate them to some channel who does retro 486 hardware/software.

    To be continued.

Good idea, will use some googling skills :P. I so want to see if my old filebase is on there. All my MOD, S3M, HSC music, all my HPAVC. Maybe even my old users.dat from Remote Access.

Well If this was me I would make a virtual Machine install the OS that the software likes and pull the files out afterwards.

Most Hypervisors have the ability to allow pass through hardware so it should be possible to do.

Not sure about the modern tape drive, but I still use a HP T1000
tape drive on my MSX6800 386SX to back up and restore files.

Not sure what kind of tapes you have, but someone with that type of
drive could surely restore them for you.
