• Qwknet - files?

From Alpha@21:4/158 to All on Tue Jan 28 15:39:31 2020
More N00b questions! Appreciate y'alls patience with me :)

    1. Is mystic able to process *files* that are sent to QWK network nodes? Setting up GameNet via QWK and wondering if I'll be able to process nodelists and infopacks to my files area, or whether I should stick to a FTN setup?

    2. Related: when setting up a QWK network, is there an easy way to import,
ala the way mystic can do with FTN 'importna.ini'?

    3. QWK network Hubs are SBBS-based, just wondering how this community
regards QWK vs FTN? Love interoperability, but curious :)

    Cheers,

QWK networking by definition doesn't support this. Synchronet has made a lot of proprietary extensions to QWK networking though so maybe they have a way to do it that could be adopted (I really just don't know)?

With FTN Mystic can just auto-create the areas you don't even need to import anything, but with QWK there isn't a way to do that. You can make your own file to import to create the areas but you'd still need to set their QWK Base ID afterwards.

I probably could try to make the QWK networking auto-create too though
    someday.

FTN is more complex/convoluted but more capable overall (imo). QWK networking is pretty limited.

Synchronet has made some extensions to make it better in some areas, but I haven't really kept up on what Rob and his team have done over the years.

Ha, yes! I actually did this when adding GameNet -- it was helpful, but I
still had to set all the Base IDs manually. That's a grind.

Appreciate the perspective. In my limited view, I agree--seems like if a
sysop is running SBBS, qwk a good/fast option. Use-case narrows after that :)

    Cheers!

The QWK spec was designed for BBS users so files were never taken into
account, aside from freqing that some QWK reader support.

By and large QWK nodes don't care about things like nodelists and
    infopacks. ;)

Synchronet BBSs can transfer files back and forth but it uses extentions
to the QWK spec. Even email/netmail (USER@QWKID) can be done between QWK
nodes using Synchronet. That's possible with other software too if they
used those QWK extentions the Synchronet uses.

When ever I joined a QWK net I always created a list of areas to import.
You still need to set the QWK hub and area numbers.

I have always liked QWK networking myself. Between SBBS nodes you can
keep in touch via email/netmail and transfer InterBBS files back and
    forth.

Those extentions that SBBS uses are not well know and I think that is
largely why it hasn't been adopted in other software.

Al, thanks for the taking the time to explain. Great info.
