• Door Setup On Ubuntu 20.04

From Nazferiti@21:3/107 to All on Wed May 13 17:26:49 2020
I got all my doors (except Tradewars) running last night on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and decided to document what I did to make it happen, in hopes that it can
save somebody a week worth of frustration. I suspect the process would be
the same on any version of Linux. Some information is specific to Mystic Config but should be relevant to any other software as well.

    Nice howto!

A cool addendum would be a nightly maintenance job (let me know if you want
to see how I do it) as well as some details on getting pkunzip.exe to work, which might be required for some interbbs games (I can help here as well).

As far as tradewars, it won't happen sadly. The way I run it is that I run
TWGS in xorg and it works with wine.

Definately would want to add info about running maintenance and interbbs
setup for sure. I am not currently joined into any interbbs games so I don't have any experience doing that.

I registered Tradewars back in the day when Gary Martin was still doing the registrations. I am running version 3.09 so there is no TWGS attached to it. Currently I'm running Tradewars on a separate Windows machine with Net2BBS as
a frontend. I copy the drop file to a folder that I have set up as a samba share and tradewars looks for the drop file there when Net2BBS hands the call off to it. It works well but I was hoping to not have to continue to do it this way. It looked like DOSEMU had some DPMI settings that I was going to mess with. Tradewars does open in Local mode so i was hopeful.

Trade Wars is a little tough from my experience I never could get it to work
on the Raspberry Pi. There is possibly an alternative for you though. If you happen to have a Windows machine networked you may be able to run Trade Wars Game Server (www.eisonline.com). This is a standalone server that can listen for either Telnet or RLogin traffic.

I loaded a TWGS server on my desktop computer. Set it up to listen on port 2002 using the RLOGIN protocol. "Use RLogin name" is set to "Passed 1st".

In Mystic -cfg's Menu settings I added a Menu for for TWGS with the following Action:
    (IR) /addr=localhost /port=2002 /user=@user@ /pass=@user@

As long as the BBS can get to TWGS it doesn't have to be accessible to the outside world (although if they are both on different ports and you can configure your firewall to direct the right port to the right computer you
can open them up both ways)

Meant to correct myself here, instad of "localhost" if its runnign on a different computer this would need to be the IP address of the machine where TWGS is running of course.

This is fantastic! I just recently completed a 20.04 install, but had to use 18.04 dosemu as the newer distro ver wasn't available on launch day.

Love to have all these How-To's aggregated somewhere, I've been speaking to Avon about potentially adding these kinds of things to a section on fsxNet
    wiki or similar!

The real work was in finding a solution. I generally thing that helping
people get on to linux is an important goal. I am not really a fan of Microsoft and love that Mystic supports the Linux community with native versions. With that said, some things are just a little more work to get working and having access to good resources when encountering problems is important. The documentation provided with Mystic are "good" but not quite good enough to get you all the way to a working setup on 20.04 using the most recent version of DOSEMU.

Once I got one door working I was able to get them all working quickly. I haven't circled back to Tradewars yet, and I have to admit it has be baffled because I was told it couldn't be done, but I am able to load into DOSEMU
and run the game in local mode so I think it might be possible with some tweaks, at least the older version (3.09) that don't come bundled with the TWGS.
