  • Game console emulation on an Nvidia Shield

    I recently bought an Nvidia Shield Pro and connected it to one of my TVs. I already have a smart TV (using Roku) but I've had some trouble with the Plex client on the Roku TV sometimes, and I'd heard the Shield can be better for streaming (which it does seem to be).

    Another thing the Shield can do is streaming games from a desktop PC if it has an Nvidia graphics card. I do, but I haven't tried that yet..

    Also, the Nvidia Shield is an Android TV device, and I'd heard there are game console emulators for Android (I have an Android phone but haven't done emulation on Android very much at all). I installed RetroArch on the Nvidia Shield and put some game ROMs on it, and I think it's actually pretty cool. I also have a bluetooth game controller from 8BitDo that works with it. I've already been doing console emulation for many years, but I still think it's pretty cool that there are things like this. With emulators, the Nvidia Shield is one device that can do streaming and also act like a retro game console. My 10-year-old self would be blown away with some of the stuff we have today.

    There is an Android RetroArch in the Android Play Store, but the notes there say it lacks the ability to download emulation cores (required to emulate different consoles) from within RetroArch (due to agreements with Google), but there's an app APK you can download directly from the RetroArch web site and side-load install it using a file browser app on the Nvidia Shield - The one directly from RetroArch has the ability to download emulation cores from within RetroArch.

    Been really happy with mine for years... currently 3 in the home. Don't really do any game emulation/streaming with it, but it can playback 4k
    h.265 video without issue from my NAS box in Kodi. I've got a few misc applications installed as well for other VoD services, but mostly in
    Kodi or YouTube apps.
