Back in the days it was mostly about having the latest version of files on my bbs. But the last few years I am trying to find older versions of files.

It started with the utility "List" - Back in the days I used it almost daily for reading docs, file_ids or checking out ascii art. Probably it is the most used util on my 486.

Last week I found a new old version, hidden on some cdrom image, unfortunately not complete with docs. I am still checking out the later version (listplus), so the list is not complete yet. But if you have an version that is not in the list yet .... please let me know.

pS: found some error in one of the descriptions in the list 94a/94b ....

Found a similar situation myself not long back where I found a "newer"
version of my FidoMailer (my BBS is running on an Atari ST, so the mailer
    was already from the 90's).

You never know what you'll find in archives.

Replying on my own message. I just found a complete archive/collection on the internet of all versions. Someone else did the job, I guess I can wipe my collection now. Saves time :))))

I hear you - I ended up using list like Xtree or Norton Commander, as a file system navigation tool. Since most everything was text, chances were that
you could hit enter and read whatever was on the disk through List.

Still, never hurts to have a backup. Too many great retro sites
disappeared, and the Wayback machine isn't 100% reliable.

    Hiya/Hallo!

This wonderfull collection can be found here: https://github.com/sebras
Its a huge collection. I did not have the time to browse it to check out what other old stuff is available.

Ah yes, in my case it was an older version, not to use it but to add it to the collection. Still what you describe is what I also do, trying to find newer versions of software you used to use a long time ago.

Concerning my dir structure I always tried to keep it as clean and flat as possible using short names.

I hear you - I ended up using list like Xtree or Norton Commander, as

Back in the 90s the last time I used Xtree I believe it had started to run
out of memory to accommodate the number of files in the system. But this is probably near end of life MS-SOD and early Win95.

I'm still using it now in my BBS VM's though and it hasn't coughed even on
    the NFS mounts yet...

Concerning my dir structure I always tried to keep it as clean and flat as possible using short names.

8.3 and drop all the vowels? :) I think that was about the most common over here. Most of mine were only 2 dirs deep with files there.. mostly for system type they belonged to, followed by area...
