│ We had hard rubbish here last week. I didn't go to far afield looking for
│ shopping, but someone just down the street turfed a thing in a case, and a
│ second mobo in its box. Both have memory, bonus, 2x8gb sticks in one, and I
│ think its a 4 in the other.

One of my PCs that I used for several years was one that someone set out at
the curb. There was not anything wrong with it so I never knew why. I
wiped the HD and put linux on it and got many years out of it.

My inkjet printer died, and the same day my neighbor put out a Canon
MX922 with a free sign. I brought it home, tried printing and it jammed
in the exit path. Looked into it, and saw a highlighter had rolled down
there. Took it out, and it worked fine. Free printer and a free
    highlighter.

This is one of those MFPs with a scanning feeder that takes 25 sheets, a
decent scanner, separate paper trays for letter and 4x6 photo paper. It
even prints CD labels! It's become a workhorse for me.

Best thing was that I found replacement ink for $12/set on Amazon. No
    more worrying about page costs.

    Hi, PF.

Free printer and a free highlighter.

I don't know why but this take really resonated with me. Sometimes the loose fries in the bag are the best part of the meal :)

Much the same here. I don't buy much new equipment, a lot of perfectly serviceable equipment gets tossed. I picked up a LaserJet 5L from a corporate that tossed it, because it took to long to wake up from sleep mode. Nothing actually wrong with it at all.

Occasioanlly you can find some really rocket ship system just sitting
forlornly on the side of the road, most tend to be fairly mid spec for their age kind of setups though. And if you just scoop up everything you see, you
end up with a garage full of boxes most of which while useable may not be
    real practical.

I picked up the current BBS box off the side of the road, an antique now Shuttle Box with a core2 quad in it. Been a combo of enough grunt to do most work without drinking power.

LOL, that is funny. All they had to do was look for the foreign object
    that you easily found.

That is a win for sure. I like my old DeskJet but the carts dry out so
easily. They are no longer available from HP but there are somewhat
    affordable replacements still being made.

I just had to get rid of a Samsung ML-2525W printer, a toner exploded
inside and there was no way I'd ever get it all out. Replaced it with a
Brother laser, which is well respected online, and it goes to sleep
continually and needs to be unplugged/plugged in to wake up.

I miss that Samsung - it was a workhorse. I only wished it did PCL.

I'll have to look that one up before my Netflix subscription expires.

Stupid "with ads" migration... seriously... Netflix was the only subscription I willingly kept and now they want to force feed me ads or hike the price by 50%. Bye, bye 11 year subscription :(

A long time ago now.. I used to have an old van, Nissan Urvan E23. It didn't drink much fuel, and would crawl at a pretty slow speed allowing a good trawling of the neighbourhood. Used to bring home all sorts of stuff.. being not long out of "home" all sorts of furniture and goodies could be used
    around the house.

Since this heyday its steadily dropped off, mostly keeping an eye peeled for computers. I hardly do that these days.

My neighbor passed away, and had two what seemed to be old P4-era
machines sitting on a carport for about a year. I was tempted to ask the
family if I could take them, but I don't have room for retro hardware.
I've got to virtualize old systems now.

Not to say that if I could find someone tossing out a Sun Sparcstation
    2, 5, IPX, Ultra 1 or Sun 3 that I wouldn't make room. :)

P3 P4 systems were pretty plentiful for a long time. Seemed to be an era
where a lot of people that didn't know much about their hardware were
expiring them and putting them out.

I've been in a similar boat for the last... 5 years or so, went from space in
a double garage too a 2 bedroom unit.. massive packing, and dropping of stuff I'd otherwise have hung onto. Having been back in a house the last 12
months, I'm getting to spread out a bit. Next week I should be getting bench/desk space for the computer room. I'll be able to get some of the goodies out and functional for the first time in a long time.
