• Windows XP on 486

Just happened to see this article today - "Windows XP can run on an Intel CPU from 1989 thanks to dedicated modder".

"Well, start brushing off those vintage 486 rigs, because a modder has actually made it happen. Going by the name Dietmar on the MSFN forums, he has somehow managed to get Microsoft's beloved Windows XP running on the ancient 486 architecture."

ISO for Windows XP Professional SP3 (English & German) (works on 486): https://archive.org/details/windowsxp486

"This is a Windows XP Professional SP3 ISO that has been modified to work on i486 processors. There is a German ISO and English ISO available. The CPU clock speed in Windows system properties is also incorrect, but programs like CPU-Z report the correct clock speed."

I saw the article on Slashdot today. The modder had to modify some system DDLs or something. Pretty insane.

Brings to mind, justt because you can doesn't mean you should. I can only
guess it's going to behave like a slug, and want a pretty good slug of RAM to get it vaguely useful.

I say that having tried running 95 on a 386DX40 when it was new.. just
because we still had one. You could do it, but... you couldn't do a lot with it.

I'm wondering how well it would run. I ran Windows 2000 on a Pentium Pro
200 with 64 mb of RAM, and it was *ok* for a test lab but wouldn't want
    to run on anything lower.
