  • Monitor upgrade: 144Hz

    I previously had been using a 4K 60Hz monitor since 2019 (an LG, which I think is a good monitor), but I've heard higher refresh rates can be good for gaming. Recently I bought one of these LG 4K 144Hz monitors, since the price has come down a bit:

    I also had some credit card rewards I used, which brought the price down to about $256 for me. (Also, now that I check it again, I see the price is now down to about $500, from about $512 when I bought mine just over a week ago..)

    I set it up with my PC last night, replacing my previous monitor. Although I haven't had much time to use it yet, I tried playing one game (Overload, which is a 2018 game that's a sequel to the classic Descent 2 PC game). It has a vsync setting but only goes to 60Hz, so I just turned off vsync. I'm not sure what framerate I was actually getting, but the video from the game was very smooth.

    The next game I want to try with it is Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. I think my PC setup should be able to provide a good frame rate (my PC has an Intel i9-9900K and a Nvidia RTX 3080 TI).

    Dear Nightfox, I come across another gaming related message from you... That game you play, Overload, succesor to the original Descent, you know Descent had VR tech in it, *even back in that day* back in 1994!! that game was a mind blow out!! And of course, Overload had to have it too, so modders built up a tool to have VR enabled in Overload too (along with a few much needed QOL improvements, where now I come to think of it, 144hz sync maybe in there too), you should check it out, and if you ever *do* get to aquire a VR headset, you should definitly try both MSFS 2020 and Overload in VR.

    Yes, I remember. There used to be a computer software store in my area that had a demo station with Descent that was configured with a pair of 3D goggles, around 1995 or so. I thought that was really cool, and I wondered why 3D goggles didn't take off until VR headsets started being released in recent years.

    And of course, Overload had to have it too, so

    I bought and played the game a couple of years ago, and had to get it going in VR with a mod (called OLMod -Overload Mod-), I guess it's an added feature in a recent update now.
    I'd have to try it again now that it is a built-in feature...
